Borussia Dortmund are in the round of 16 of a European competition for the sixth consecutive year, matching the club record set between 1993 and 1998.

Historical: This is the second time that Borussia Dortmund have reached the round of 16 in a UEFA competition for a sixth consecutive year. Since 2012/13, they have reached this stage four times in the UEFA Champions League, and it is the second time since 2015/16 they have done so in the UEFA Europa League. The Black and Yellows last saw uninterrupted success in winning games on the European stage between the 1992/93 season and the 1997/98 season.

Turned Up: BVB had chances towards the end of the game, and put the statistics right. By the end of the encounter, the stats read 12-9 shots for the Dortmund men, who also had 55% ball possession.

Saviour: Marcel Schmelzer shot his team into the round of 16 with his sixth goal in 336 competitive matches for Borussia Dortmund. He had only scored once before in a European cup competition, a fantastic goal to get a 2-1 win over Real Madrid in October 2012.

Victorious: BVB have reached the next round on 17 of 18 occasions when they have won the first leg of the tie at home. After winning 3-2 in the first leg, a 1-1 draw was sufficient to see them through. BVB have only gone out of a tournament once after winning at home in the first of two matches. In December 1987, a 3-0 win over FC Brugge in the third round of the UEFA Cup was followed by a 5-0 loss away after extra time.

Improved Record: BVB have frequently lost to Italian opposition in knock-out games. In their sixteenth duel against such opposition, BVB were able to eliminate an opponent from Serie A for the fourth time. (br)
