The seventh matchday of the Regionalliga West took Borussia Dortmund U23 to Ost-Westfalen to play SV Rödinghausen. The Häcker Wiehenstadion was the venue for this meeting between the teams placed fourth and sixth in the table. BVB coach Jan Siewert was forced into making several changes compared to last Sunday's match against Fortuna Düsseldorf. This was because no players from the first team squad were available for action, meaning that Siewert only had players from the Regionalliga squad at his disposal.

It only took three minutes for SV Rödinghausen to take a 1-0 lead. After a corner was repelled, the ball fell to Dennis Engel, who left Oelschlägel with no chance as he fired into the top corner from 20 metres out. Borussia quickly pulled themselves together and didn't let this setback get to them. Quite the opposite in fact: Massimo Ornatelli confidently swept home a free kick to bring the score to 1-1.

The Black and Yellows then started to dictate the play, and were rewarded a quarter of an hour later with the second goal. Julian Schwermann pulled the trigger from 18 yards out to find the back of the net and give BVB a well deserved lead. Borussia then had further good opportunities, with the best of the lot falling to Pavlidis in the 23rd minute from a corner. The game had become very lively, with both defenses leaving plenty of space in behind. In the 28th minute, SV Rödinghausen scored in the aftermath of a free kick which had initially been cleared, bringing the score level at 2-2. After conceding, Borussia placed more emphasis on controlling the game, which resulted in a quiet end to the first half with little in the way of real action.

Jan Siewert made use of the pause to make a substitution. Gianluca Rizzo saw his first action of the season, coming on to replace Dominik Wanner. The home team were the brighter of the two teams in the early part of the second half, creating more in the way of chances. The first real opportunity for BVB after the interval once more came from a Massimo Ornatelli free-kick. His delivery from out wide was met by the head of Sören Dieckmann to put BVB back in the lead.

Joseph Boyamba makes it 4-3

The lead however didn't last long. In the 69th minute, SVR struck back once more. Björn Schlottke managed to find some space around the penalty spot to head home a ball from out wide and bring the score to 3-3. At this point it was a real back and forth encounter. Both teams were determined to get the winning goal, but it was BVB who ultimately succeeded. A superb assist from Gianluca Rizzo found Joseph Boyamba, who scored to give Borussia the lead. Five minutes later, he even had the chance to make it five, but his header flew just over the home team's crossbar.

The closing stages of the match were marked by a lot of interruptions. Several small fouls prevented the game from flowing as it had done. In the last few minutes, great collective effort and just the right amount of guile were enough to see BVB get themselves over the line and secure the win.

Coach Jan Siewert was full of praise for his players after the match. ''We expected an intense game. My team proved that we're capable of posing a real threat from set pieces. There was plenty for the spectators to enjoy, we managed to keep our cool, and we walk away from the match as deserved winners.''
