A crowd of approximately 400 spectators at the Rote Erde Stadium witnessed an attacking masterclass on Saturday afternoon as the Borussia Dortmund U23s swept aside relegation battlers SV Straelen by a 9-2 scoreline.

The pre-match scenario:

The BVB reserves had the momentum on their side ahead of their penultimate home game of the season. But their visitors from Straelen travelled to Dortmund in buoyant mood too, having claimed a 2-0 win against Alemannia Aachen last time out.

Personnel matters:

BVB boss Alen Terzic was without the injured quartet of Marco Hober, Denzeil Boadu, Haymenn Bah-Traore and Massimo Ornatelli, while Julian Schwermann missed out through suspension.

The first half:

From the first whistle, the Black & Yellows were clearly out to claim all three points and they opened the scoring with only four minutes on the clock. Luca Kilian raced towards the byline down the right flank and cut the ball back into the path of the onrushing Taylan Duman, who gave the home side a slender early advantage. The visitors' first foray into the Dortmund box came five minutes later but proved fruitful as, to the home side's horror, referee Alexander Ernst opted to award a penalty for handball. The match official believed that the Dortmund centre-back Marco Rente had handled the ball as he tumbled over and Kevin Weggen made it 1-1 from the spot.

BVB took some time to settle back into their usual rhythm, but it wasn't all that long before they re-established their lead. In the 23rd minute, left-back Herbert Bockhorn fed the pacey Hüseyin Bulut and he fired past Straelen goalkeeper Buchholz to put the hosts 2-1 ahead. The Black & Yellows dominated the midfield and kept SV Straehlen camped in their own half, with a quickly-taken free-kick in the 38th minute the most dangerous moment for the visitors since their equaliser. But they did manage to restore parity at 2-2 five minutes before half-time when Kevin Weggen netted a spectacular volley after the Dortmund defence had failed to properly clear a corner-kick. There were no further goals before the break and the teams went in at half-time with the score at 2-2.

The second half:

It was the visitors from the Dutch-German border who made the better start to the second period, but Dortmund grew into the game and rediscovered their attacking rhythm 10 minutes after the restart, finding the net twice in two minutes to make it 4-2: Gianluca Rizzo and Joseph Boyamba scored the goals in front of 349 spectators at the Rote Erde Stadion. Alen Terzic subsequently shuffled the pack and sent on defender Tim Sechelmann for the final half-hour. The 20-year-old has only played for 20 minutes in total this term.

And it was Sechelmann who set up the fifth Dortmund goal, assisting Joseph Boyamba's second of the match in the 65th minute. But the home side's desire for goals did not subside, with Luca Kilian getting his reward for a strong display when he headed home the sixth goal from a corner. The game was well beyond the visitors at this point, with Joseph Boyamba making it 7-2 in the 80th minute. Weggen then scored an own goal with two minutes remaining to make it 8-2 to Dortmund, who scored their final goal in the 90th minute when substitute Tekiela converted a penalty to put the home side 9-2 ahead and secure the biggest-ever home win in the history of the Borussia Dortmund U23s.

The reaction from BVB boss Alen Terzic:

"I think that we were already performing well in the first half. The first goal was brilliantly created. We reacted brilliantly to both goals we conceded, produced some free-flowing link-up play and kept our composure. It's obviously wonderful that we ended up scoring so many goals. That will boost our confidence as the season draws to a close."

Outlook:

Next up for Borussia Dortmund is their game in hand against Wuppertal, which has already been rescheduled twice. Kick-off at the Stadion am Zoo will be at 19:00 CET on Wednesday.

BVB U23s: Oelschlägel – Kilian, Rente, Balerdi, Bockhorn – Konate, Duman, Bulut (Ametov, 75) – Boyamba, Rizzo (Tekiela, 80), Wanner (Sechelmann, 59)
