As part of their intensive pre-season preparations, BVB have played two friendlies on the same day. Having been held to a 1-1 draw against SC Paderborn earlier in the afternoon, Borussia Dortmund then lost 3-1 to VfL Bochum. Hummels scored for BVB.

Lucien Favre named an entirely different starting XI to the one that had faced Paderborn for the clash with VfL Bochum – although he lined them up in the same 4-2-3-1 formation.

The match got off to an intense start, with Ganvoula posing the first danger in front of goal. But his shot from some way out went well wide of the target. The Black & Yellows had more possession of the ball, albeit without ever really creating goalscoring chances. Instead it was Bochum who took the lead, capitalising on a misplaced pass and opening the scoring through Ganvoula in the 16th minute of the match. That advantage was doubled nine minutes later when Zoller nodded home a header from two metres out at the near post.

BVB then came back into the game, with Tachie's effort kept out by Bochum shot-stopper Riemann on the half-hour mark before Bellingham and Brandt had long-range efforts in the 36th and 39th minutes respectively.

Ganvoula punished another misplaced pass only a few seconds after the restart and increased the visitors' lead to 3-0. BVB continued to struggle to create clear-cut goalscoring opportunities. Bellingham missed the target from a good position in the 47th minute, before Duman hit a wayward effort after being teed up by Brandt in the 53rd minute. Hazard did beat goalkeeper Riemann 10 minutes later, only to be thwarted on the edge of the box. In the 66th minute, Piszczek had the best opportunity of the second half with a header that was kept out by Drewes. They did pull a goal back a minute later, however, Hummels scoring a shot on the turn to make it 3-1. Unbehaun made an outstanding save to keep out Weilandt in the 72nd minute. At the other end, Hazard went close with a shot from around 20 metres out in the 83rd minute, as did Bellingham with a strike in the closing minutes.

BVB: Unbehaun – Wolf, Piszczek, Hummels, Duman – Bellingham, Witsel – Tachie, Brandt, Bakir – Hazard
Goals: 0-1 Ganvoula (16), 0-2 Zoller (25), 0-3 Ganvoula (46), 1-3 Hummels (67)
