Goalkeeper Roman Bürki, 31, will leave Borussia Dortmund in the summer and join St. Louis City SC in the North American Major League Soccer (MLS). Bürki's contract with BVB, which was set to expire on 30 June 2023, will be prematurely terminated at the end of the current season.

"It was an honour to have played for this great club for seven years in total. I'll always remember not just the cup triumphs in 2017 and 2021, but all the good and difficult times we experienced together too. My thanks go first and foremost to my great team-mates, but also to the BVB officials, my coaches, the entire team behind the team and, last but not least, the unbelievable fans. Once a Borusse, always a Borusse!", said Roman Bürki. "In my private life, I've already spent a lot of time in the USA over the past few years. I'm a big fan of US sports and I'm really excited to be able to help build something in St. Louis, at a club that's in development."

Bürki has made 232 competitive appearances for BVB to date. His future club will join the MLS as its 28th so-called franchise. The sporting director of the Missouri-based club is Lutz Pfannenstiel, who is known from his time in the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim and Düsseldorf, among others.

Borussia Dortmund's sporting director Michael Zorc thanked Roman Bürki "for seven years during which he always gave everything. Roman was our No. 1 for many years, is a worthy BVB player, has won titles with us and has joined us on parades around Borsigplatz with the DFB-Pokal trophy. These titles, these moments will always be associated with him too. The past one and a half years have been anything but easy for Roman in sporting terms, but he has always behaved professionally and put himself at the team's service. We wish Roman all the best for his professional and personal future in the USA."
