Borussia Dortmund have followed up their 2-2 stalemate against AZ Alkmaar with a 3-3 draw against Standard Liège in the second friendly fixture of their training camp. Thomas Meunier, Antonios Papadopoulos and Samuel Bamba scored for BVB at the Marbella Football Centre on Tuesday.

In addition to the injured Julian Ryerson, Felix Nmecha, Karim Adeyemi and Julien Duranville plus the duo of Ramy Bensebaini and Sebastien Haller, who are at the Africa Cup of Nations, Marco Reus (personal reasons), Emre Can (rest) as well as Marius Wolf and Mateu Morey (both infection) also missed the Liège match. Centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck had already played at left-back at the end of the game against Alkmaar and took over the position from the start on this occasion. Coach Edin Terzic once again lined his team up in a 4-1-4-1 formation.

BVB started the match with lots of possession and also had several promising attacks thanks to through-balls but could not register a shot at goal. The Black & Yellows attacked down the right after a quarter-hour and Donyell Malen crossed the ball towards the back post, where the unmarked Thomas Meunier met the ball with a header to make it 1-0. Liège created their first opportunity five minutes later and BVB were fortunate that Wilfried Kanga only struck the bar.

Dortmund continued to have more of the game thereafter. Schlotterbeck's header following a corner-kick was held onto by goalkeeper Arnaud Bodart (26). Six minutes later, Malen once again cut the ball back into the path of Meunier. The right-back could have gone for goal himself but instead decided to play a square ball that was intercepted. Kanga subsequently converted his second chance to score his first goal, getting his foot to the ball at the near post following a ball into the middle to level at 1-1 (36). Shortly before the break, BVB posed a threat once again: Schlotterbeck ventured down the left wing and fed Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, who had the vision to pick out Malen. But his shot was blocked (45).

The Black & Yellows registered the first chances in the second period: a shot by Giovanni Reyna was initially blocked in the 49th minute, before Mats Hummels headed a corner over the bar. Niklas Süle got a shot away from a narrow angle following a free-kick four minutes later, but Bodart saved the attempt. Niclas Füllkrug then headed narrowly over the bar too (55). BVB continued to set the tone after the interval, but Liège continued to take their chances.

A move down the left flank was rounded off by Kanga in the middle, who scored his second goal of the day to put Liège 2-1 up (59). The Belgians almost upped their lead, but Noah Ohio struck the underside of the bar from a narrow angle in the 67th minute. The ball bounced down and back into play. Füllkrug was also denied by the bar after a free-kick by substitute Ole Pohlmann, but fellow sub Antonios Papadopoulos slotted home at the second attempt to restore parity at 2-2 (70).

The Liège lead was re-established in the 77th minute: Alexander Meyer, who had come on to replace Gregor Kobel between the sticks, made a strong save to deny Ohio, but Stipe Perica followed up to make it 3-2. After a foul on Bamba, BVB had a free-kick from a good position on the edge of the box in the 80th minute, but Reyna fired well wide. Meyer made another strong stop to thwart Ohio with five minutes of normal time to go. Reyna had the chance to equalise in the 88th minute and goalie Matthieu Epolo saved it, but Bamba slotted home the follow-up to make it 3-3.

Borussia Dortmund's training camp is now over, with the BVB players set to fly back to Dortmund in the afternoon. The next competitive match will be against SV Darmstadt 98 on Saturday (31/01, 18:30 CET).
