The world's most beautiful stadium is celebrating its birthday. Opened as the Westfalenstadion in 1974, SIGNAL IDUNA PARK will turn 50 on 2 April 2024. Borussia Dortmund will mark the anniversary of their temple with numerous activities.

Emotion, passion and many unforgettable moments: the stadium has been Borussia Dortmund's home venue for half a century and has played host to legendary victories and heartbreaking defeats. To the people of Dortmund, it is the most beautiful stadium of them all: a home, a stage, a temple. For all other football fans, it is one of the best-known, most popular and most renowned football stadia in the world. Its close proximity to the city centre and imposing architecture make it a landmark for the city and the Ruhr region. The largest all-standing stand in Europe and the unmistakable atmosphere are known across the world. The Westfalenstadion had a capacity of 54,000 spectators when it opened in 1974 and, following several phases of expansion, SIGNAL IDUNA PARK now holds precisely 81,365 spectators. Borussia Dortmund regularly boast the highest average attendance in the Bundesliga and have also been right up there in the European ranking for home league attendances over the past 10 years.

Many activities planned

Borussia Dortmund will be marking the stadium's 50th birthday with numerous activities over the course of the coming weeks. The home game against VfB Stuttgart on 6 April will be entirely dedicated to the occasion, while a special exhibition on the stadium's history will also open at the BORUSSEUM on the same day. On 2 April, the 50th anniversary of the stadium's opening, BVB-TV is planning a new edition of the popular talk show "Brinkhoff's Ballgeflüster" live from SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, which will contain anecdotes and stories about the stadium. In addition, more stadium-related fan merchandise will be available in the coming weeks.

DO it yourself

The fans make the stadium what it is. That's why we want to involve our supporters in one of our first birthday activities: BVB fans all over the world are invited to recreate our stadium, draw it or depict it in other creative ways. Whether it is a simple drawing with a pen and paper, a replica made from various household items or a digital copy of the stadium, there are no limits to your creativity!

The most striking and imaginative entries will be shared publicly on BVB's channels! So: build a replica stadium, upload a picture of your replica with the hashtag #DOIY or send it to aktion-social@bvb.de and, with a bit of luck, your stadium will end up on BVB's social media channels!

Borussia Dortmund Managing Director Carsten Cramer explained: "We're delighted to be celebrating the 50th birthday of our stadium, which has not only shaped the history of Borussia Dortmund but also that of German football, in April. SIGNAL IDUNA PARK is the home of the club and its fans, who have experienced many unforgettable moments at this special venue. Our stadium is the common denominator in countless stories. We will celebrate it in style in the coming weeks."

Torsten Uhlig, an Executive Board member at the SIGNAL IDUNA Group, said: "The world's most beautiful stadium will be 50 years old on 2 April this year and we have been a strong partner of Borussia Dortmund for almost as long. As the proud namesake, we naturally want to celebrate this special anniversary – together with Borussia Dortmund and their fans. We recognise the emotionality and importance that lie in the tradition of this unique football stadium and look forward to experiencing many wonderful and celebratory moments together with BVB and their fans in the coming weeks."
