Borussia Dortmund is the second Bundesliga club to hit the million mark on Twitter. And to mark the occasion, they are thanking its followers from around the world with a raffle with loads of great prizes. BVB are now also part of the elite “millionaires club“ on the world’s second-largest social network, taking front ranks on the national and international stage.

In Germany, BVB are in second place in social networks, but their number of international users is growing as well, with two-thirds of their fans coming from outside of Germany. Most of their non-German followers are from England, Indonesia, Mexico and USA, with BVB ranking 14th in the world among football clubs. “Our reach abroad is great, but what’s really nice is the strong interaction with these users,” says David Görges, Borussia Dortmund’s head of New Media, adding: “All of our channels are bilingual, in German and in English, some of them are even in Japanese or Portuguese.”

And this seems to be what users want. They retweet and share content, spreading the news all over the Twitter network. “It’s important to take users seriously while maintaining Twitter’s own language – given that you only have 140 characters to Tweet this is quite a challenge,” says Peter Flore, the club’s social network editor. And as the results show, this challenge has been met – the responses and reactions are positive everywhere (see examples in gallery).

The target groups are diverse as this short message service has become one of the most important networks for professionals, be it journalists or bloggers, with nearly all of them having a permanent Twitter account to get breaking news. On top of that, this platform has also become a relevant service channel for Borussia Dortmund. “There is nothing like a stupid question. We answer almost everything and we believe that publishing the responses also provides a steep learning curve for all the other fans,” says Flore.
