Hamburger SV and Borussia Dortmund face each other for the 110. time on Friday evening. The first match between the two teams was on the 10.May, 1953 in the final round of the German Championship. The last of so far 14 Dortmund wins on the Alster was on the 22.January, 2012.

It was also the last BVB win in the last nine years at HSV. And there again Borussia did not lose in Hamburg for nine times in a row between 1997 and 2007. So it is time that something changes again and that Black Yellow can be inspired by great games and great victories in the Volkspark Stadium.

10. May 1953

In the final round of the German Championship BVB faces HSV in Hamburg. Preißler (to the right on the photo) and Niepieklo put the guests in the lead by 2-0 by the 59.minute, but Woitkowiak levels the score with a brace within seven minutes (70.,77.). Posipal even gives HSV the lead by making it 3-2 seven minutes before the final whistle. It looks like the match has been decided. But Borussia gets one back again. And what a finale! Preiβler in the 85. and Farke in the 88.minute mean that Dortmund can celebrate.

20. May 1961

Eight years later and again it is the final round in the German Championship and again the game takes your breath away: Kelbassa scores to make it 0-1. Werner (36.) and Seeler (49.) put the ‘red shorts’ in front. However after that there is only one team in the game: Konietza, Schütz with two goals and Schmidt make the 5-2 away win perfect.

14. August 1976

BVB is back in the Bundesliga – and what an impression they make! The newly promoted team takes the lead by 3-0 through goals by Geyer, Hartl and Kostedde. Hamburg claws back to 2-3. Kostedde scores the 4-2 in the 60.minute, but that still does not decide the game. After Volkert scores to make it 3-4, HSV still has a quarter of an hour to equalise. However goalkeeper Bertram (photo) does not let himself get beaten again.

10. December 1994

BVB secures the autumn championship by winning 4-0 at HSV. Sammer and three goals by Zorc make sure of this decisive victory. Sammer still has a good moan!

27. April 2002

Match day 33 and the penultimate match day, when Borussia takes over at the top from Leverkusen. Goals by Amoroso, Rosicky, Amoroso and Koller mean that BVB are in the lead 2-0, 3-1 and 4-2. But HSV will not give up. Meijers scores to make it 3-4 in the 90.minute and a turbulent time added on ensues.

25. March 2006

The tenth BVB away win in Hamburg is maybe the most spectacular one: after Smolarek made it 0-1, Lauth and Ailton turn the game around. Rosicky equalises in the 68.minute to make it 2-2. Then Kringe scores the goal of the year: he wallops the ball into the net like a torpedo in the 83.minute to make it 2-3. Hamburg goes all out for attack. Weidenfeller makes several fantastic saves and then he starts the most famous solo in league history: Rosicky starts way back in his own half, he only has the empty goal in front of him, first of all he celebrates at the half way line, then he celebrates a second time at the edge of the penalty area, before he rolls the ball over the line to make it 2-4.

22. January 2012

The eleventh and so far the last Black Yellow win away to Hamburg is also the biggest win. A Black Yellow wave of pressure winds its way over the Elbe into the Volkspark. The pressing up front by the north Germans takes its toll right from the start. Kagawa is convincing in the way he starts the move that ends with Grosskreutz giving BVB the lead after several missed chances (16.). Lewandowski ends a slalom run by making it 0-2 (37.). Blazczykowski makes it 0-3 twelve minutes after half time and this means the game has already all but been decided. The Pole scores the fourth with a penalty (76.) and Lewandowski adds the fifth just a short while later (83.). Guerrero can only make the score a little less unappealing, but he cannot do anything to prevent BVB biggest away win in Hamburg. Boris Rupert
