The 2021/22 season has begun: while the players underwent their first day of performance tests at the training complex of the Dortmund Technical University, Borussia Dortmund's new head coach Marco Rose was introduced at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK on Thursday.

Rose sat alongside chief executive officer Hans-Joachim Watzke and sporting director Michael Zorc for his first press conference in Black & Yellow. ''We've had a high level of appreciation for Marco for a number of years now. That's why we're so delighted to have him here now,'' said Watzke. ''His way of playing football is what we need here at BVB. We want to send out the Borussia Dortmund feeling with him.''

''We think that Marco represents modern, attacking and offensive football, which fits in very well with Borussia Dortmund. We like how he strikes a very nice balance between playing without the ball and finding creative solutions when in possession,'' said Zorc, adding: ''He is capable of developing players and teams. And he's also a great guy in terms of character, a real team player.''

Part of BVB

Rose is delighted ''to be able to be part of the history of Borussia Dortmund.'' Expectations are high: ''At BVB you compete for trophies. That's one of the reasons I chose to come to the club.'' The new coach had the opportunity to meet the team's support staff yesterday at the club's training complex in Brackel. ''My coaching staff and I have been given a great reception. I can't wait to get to know the team more and more. That will happen step by step, as a few of the players are still competing in the EURO.'' The BVB head coach has already been in touch with a few of his new charges. ''I checked in with Axel Witsel, I asked how he is getting on. It's unbelievable how he's managed to work his way back from injury. I've also had contact with captain Marco Reus and Mats Hummels, as well as a few of the younger players.''

Put in a lot of effort, dominate opponents

''I already have an idea of the way we want to play,'' said Rose, going on to add: ''Dortmund is a place for hard-working football. That means putting in a lot of effort, running lots, working hard without the ball, getting the stadium behind you, playing fast in transition, but also playing good football and dominating the opposition. That's what we're going to be working on together.'' The new coach wants his Black & Yellow side to show flexibility and be able to play with both three and four at the back. ''The diamond is a really exciting system, but there is also a lot to be said for 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1.'' However, the team's formation is not the most important thing: ''We will find the system in which the players feel most at ease. It's all about playing football, regardless of formation, that people can identify with.''

At the start of his time in charge, Rose won't be able to work with the full squad, as many are still away on international duty. ''We're cheering on all the players who are at the EURO. We know what the situation is for this preseason and we're going to work around it. The lads should have their holiday. Erling and Gio both had international games, so they'll come join the squad a bit later.''

The start of preseason

The remaining players will get things underway with some initial tests on Thursday and Friday before Rose introduces football content: ''It's all about working on the kind of football that we want to play. We're going to play a lot of football in preseason.''

Edin Terzic, at his own request, will not be part of the coaching team. Instead he is taking on the role of technical director at BVB. ''I was privy to the decision-making process. I had contact with Edin last season. I would have liked to have him as assistant coach,'' said Rose: ''However, I accept and respect his decision to take on a new role and extend himself beyond just the football side of things.''
