Matchday 19 of this year’s Bundesliga season has been selected as the annual ‘’Day of Remembrance in German football’’. A number of clubs and fans marked the 74th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp on 27 January 1945 by participating in various activities to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust.

For several years now, the DFL foundation has supported both the ‘’Nie wieder!’’ (never again!) initiative as well as the ‘’Day of Remembrance in German football’’, which takes place every year on or around 27 January, the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp. All clubs in both the 1. and 2. Bundesliga are requested to take part in acts of remembrance on match day.

For a number of years, Borussia Dortmund has also played an active role in the fight against antisemitism and other forms of discrimination. Among other things, the club works together with various partners to organise workshops held at memorial sites. Those who have participated in these educational trips include fans as well as members of staff at both BVB and the club’s main sponsor EVONIK. Of paramount importance at these workshops are the stories of Jewish people from Dortmund who became victims of the holocaust.

With this in mind, BVB has decided to support this year’s ‘’Day of Remembrance in German football’’ with the release of a video which pays respect to Jewish people who were deported from Dortmund. Each biography will be respectively introduced by a fan, a member of staff at BVB, a representative of EVONIK, as well as BVB legend Lars Ricken. The hashtag #weremember, which appears at the end of the video, alludes to the campaign of the same name, which is organised by the World Jewish Congress (WJC) and supported by various institutions throughout the world. The video was also shown at the stadium before Saturday’s home match against Hannover 96. What is more, both teams lined up together before kick-off to be photographed with the ‘’#weremember’’ hashtag.

We would also like to take this opportunity to refer to our annual ‘’Tag gegen das Vergessen’’ event, which will take place in the BORUSSEUM on Monday 28.01.2019 at 19:09. The theme of this year’s event is ‘’The path to the Holocaust. The escalation of the German policy of extermination in the Soviet Union in the Summer of 1941.’’ In addition, from Sunday onwards, the special exhibition ‘’I.G. Farben and the Buna-Monowitz concentration camp’’ will take place at the Museum of Art and Cultural History in Dortmund. This exhibition is supported by both BVB and the club’s main sponsor EVONIK.

Borussia Dortmund supports an open and diverse society and takes a firm stance against antisemitism and all forms of discrimination

Never again! - Together we will not forget.
