A great player said good bye today in the SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, and as was fitting the occasion, Sebastian Kehl was quite taken in the interview after the game. He admitted: “of course you try to be prepared, you go through many scenarios in your head. But that doesn’t really work. I tried to put a cloak over it.”

Sebastian, how do you feel after this farewell game in the SIGNAL IDUNA PARK?
“It was a very emotional day. I am happy and very grateful for the time I have had here at Borussia Dortmund. It was 13 years full of highs and lows. It’s difficult to put into words what I feel. I am happy that we won today. On the one side because this great club will be competing in Europe next season again, but it is also nice for me to finish this career with a victory in the Bundesliga. Even if we do have a very important game next week. I will definitely not forget the moment here today.”

What goes through your head when saying good bye is so emotional?
“Above all the many lovely moments of your career go through your head. I could not really prepare for it. Of course you try to prepare for this is some way, you go through many scenarios in your head. But that doesn’t really work.”

„A big Thank You to the boys! “

How difficult was it to concentrate on the game with all that was happening around you?
“That wasn’t easy. Especially because my actual farewell was before the game. So I didn’t know beforehand how that would affect me. I tried to put a cloak over it all, because you just can’t hide from it all so easily. I am too emotional and sensitive for it not to have an effect on me.”

You came onto the pitch as the captain again today. How did that happen?
„Mats came to me before the game, I think he had had a few words with some of our team mates before then. That was a great gesture, a wonderful moment. A big Thank You to the boys! It was a special moment for me to lead the team out again today.”

And finally some statistics: you are the fifth player who has won three Championships with BVB. How much would it mean to you to be the first player to win five big titles with BVB?

“Statistics don’t really mean much to me. But of course I would like to have this title regardless if I am the first or the second player in the history of Borussia Dortmund. It would be a highlight for us all to have a great farewell in Berlin. It would be the icing on the cake for me in my great career.” (djg)
