Borussia Dortmund are aiming to reach the semi-finals of European football's top competition for a fifth time after 1964, 1997, 1998 and 2013. To do so, they need to beat Atlético Madrid by two goals.

The scenario

After the 2-1 loss in the first leg, BVB must win the match and have a two-goal lead after 90 or 120 minutes. Otherwise, progression to the semi-finals will be determined by a penalty shootout. In order to take the tie to extra-time, Borussia must win by a one-goal margin (1-0, 2-1, 3-2, etc.). The away goals rule no longer exists.

History

After an away defeat by a single goal in the first leg, BVB have reached the next round on seven occasions; on six occasions, they did not manage to progress. Their clash with RSC Anderlecht in 1990 was a special case in this regard. After losing the first leg 1-0, BVB failed to progress with a 2-1 win in Dortmund due to the away goals rule.

The home record against Spanish opponents is positive. The previous 18 clashes at the Strobelallee have produced eight wins, seven draws and three defeats.

Borussia have won six of their eight knockout ties with Spanish teams to date. The only failures came against Real Madrid (1998 and 2014).

BVB have previously faced Atlético Madrid in Dortmund on three occasions. There was a 1-0 home victory in the quarter-finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1966, then Borussia lost 2-1 in the Champions League group stages in 1996. The most recent clash in 2018 ended with a clear 4-0 win (also in the group phase). That was Atlético's biggest defeat in European competition and the biggest loss under Diego Simeone.

Atlético facts

The club reached the semi-finals of the top club competition three times from 2014 to 2017.

The first-leg victory saw Atlético end a run of six matches without a victory against a German opponent.

The Spaniards have won their last eight knockout ties with German clubs. The last of their five eliminations to date was against Dynamo Dresden in 1979/80.

Penalty shootouts

Borussia Dortmund's record stands at two wins and two defeats (6-5 victory against Auxerre, semi-final of the UEFA Cup in 1992/93; 3-1 triumph against Rangers, third round of the UEFA Cup in 1999/2000; 4-2 loss to Club Brugge, third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League in 2003/04; 4-3 defeat to Udinese, first round of the UEFA Cup in 2008/09).

Atlético have won three times (most recent against Inter in the last 16) and lost four times (most recently in the 2016 final against Real). (br)
