Borussia Dortmund are one of two recipients of this year's UEFA #EqualGame Award. The club will receive the award for its tireless long-term work in, among other things, tackling the far-right infiltration of its fan base, challenging everyday racism, and adopting a clear policy on the humanitarian rights of refugees and asylum seekers.

Hans-Joachim Watzke, CEO of Borussia Dortmund, will receive the award on behalf of the club at the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League group stage draw in Monaco tonight.

UEFA's annual #EqualGame Award recognises a person or entity that has acted as a role model in promoting diversity, inclusion and accessibility in European football and, in doing so, has reflected the values of UEFA's #EqualGame Respect campaign.

Borussia Dortmund have played a leading role in German football's campaign against far-right groups, running a series of activities and initiatives. For a considerable number of years, BVB have sought to change the attitudes of fans with far-right links by launching initiatives to promote awareness, holding constructive dialogues and taking decisive action to combat such tendencies.

BVB have even entered into partnerships with fans to organise activities together and spread a message against discrimination, antisemitism and racism. These activities include providing financial support for the Holocaust Memorial Day, the "Borussia verbindet" (Borussia connects) campaign which was introduced in 2018 and the initiative "Kein Bier für Rassisten" (No beer for racists), as part of which thousands of beermats bearing the above slogan have been distributed.

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin paid tribute to Borussia Dortmund for their pioneering campaign. "Borussia Dortmund can be justifiably proud of their outstanding work to challenge far-right attitudes and actions, conveying the clear message that racism, intolerance and discrimination have no place in football. The club has set an important example for other clubs throughout Europe to follow."

BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke said: "Borussia Dortmund feel that social engagement is extremely important. We're delighted that this engagement has been recognised with this prestigious UEFA award."

UEFA opted to select two winners for its annual #EqualGame Award. The other recipient is Scott Cunliffe, a loyal fan of Burnley who has been given the award for his "RunAway Challenge". During the 2018/19 season, Scott ran to every single away game the English Premier League club played in order to raise money for charitable causes. His initiative was a resounding success. Scott covered nearly 5,000 kilometres and almost six million steps, raising more than €60,000 for English Premier League clubs' charities and capturing the hearts of thousands of people in England.
