Three BVB assists as Sabitzer's Austria beats Ryerson's Norway

The UEFA Nations League match between Austria and Norway in Linz on Sunday evening (13 October) saw two BVB players go head-to-head: Marcel Sabitzer and his Austrian teammates beat Julian Ryerson's Norway 5-1 (1-1) and are now top of their group. BVB players provided assists for three of the six goals scored in the game.

Both teams came into the game with wins under their belts: Austria had beaten Kazakhstan 4-0 on Thursday evening, while Norway had defeated Slovenia 3-0, with the Norwegians topping the table with seven points, three ahead of Austria.

Both Black & Yellows were in their teams' starting line-ups, with Sabitzer on the left for Austria and Ryerson on the right for Norway. Austria took the lead in the eighth minute through a goal from Marko Arnautovic, but shortly afterwards, Marcel Sabitzer needed treatment after a collision in his own penalty area – the Borussia player was able to continue, but played with a head bandage from the 18th minute onwards.

The first Black & Yellow assist of the game was provided by Julian Ryerson to help Norway draw level at 1-1 in the 39th minute. The BVB defender delivered a free-kick from the left to the head of his fellow countryman Alexander Sørloth, who nodded the ball into the back of the net. After half-time, the hosts in Linz took the lead again through goals from Marko Arnautovic (49, penalty) and Philipp Lienhart (58) – Marcel Sabitzer then set up goals number four and five for the Austrians , both with precise cross from the left into the box: first to the head of Stefan Posch (62), then to Michael Gregoritsch (71).

Julian Ryerson watched on from the bench as Austria scored their fifth goal of the game: the Borusse striker was substituted for Patrick Berg after 63 minutes. Marcel Sabitzer, whose Austria team now sit at the top of the table with seven points, followed by Slovenia and Norway (both on seven), played the full 90 minutes and took the captain's armband from Marko Arnautovic after 69 minutes.
