Strategy and mission statement

Borussia Dortmund's holistic sustainability strategy focuses on the environmental, social, and governance dimensions and is derived from our corporate strategy, in which we commit ourselves to shaping our business activities and relationships in a sustainable manner and recognize sustainable development as a global guiding principle.

For BVB, this means acting in a way that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Our understanding of responsibility is based on the symbiosis of three important levels: BVB as a socially anchored institution, the interconnection between intrinsic motivation and external demands, and a concrete strategic approach.

The latter is based on continuous improvement and combines the following key areas of action with clearly defined core objectives, which we hope will enable us to achieve substantial momentum and impact.

Clearly defined and tangible principles of responsibility also represent our overall social impact and self-image. Derived from the obligation to assume social responsibility originally imposed on us by Franz Jacobi – one of the founders of BVB–, we carry this obligation into the present, fill it with life, and are committed to ensuring our own future viability.

We get people thinking.

We use the communicative power of the BVB community to draw attention to the important challenges of our time, create understanding and provide options for action. Some topics seem to be overwhelming – yet there are many of us. We can only shape a future worth living if we do it together. As one of the football clubs with the largest number of members in Europe, we use our reach to be a multiplier with a sense of perspective and courage for meaningful changes, to strengthen good impulses and – where necessary – to promote thinking.

We create opportunities for sustainable actions.

As the heart of regional football enthusiasm, we make many adjustments that enable or facilitate our members, fans and partners to act more consciously. In this way, we move from being doers to being enablers: Through joint initiatives and offerings, we are creating a framework in which we can actively participate with our stakeholders in solving ecological and social challenges and assume social responsibility.

We unite through culture.

At BVB, it’s not just about football. The feeling that members, fans and employees share during games – and beyond the stadium – unites us. The result is a community that sticks together “firmly and loyally”, that carries the mutual respect of “true love” and in which everyone feels a sense of belonging. 

We tackle regional challenges with strong support.

Borussia Dortmund is inseparably linked to its city and has taken responsibility for the people in the region since its beginnings. As a socially active organization, BVB has always been aware of its special charisma and reach. The club’s own foundation “leuchte auf” bundles our commitment to tackle socially relevant challenges – particularly in helping children, young people, socially disadvantaged people as well as promoting exercise and sport. 

We make a lasting impact that leaves a mark.

With great influence comes great responsibility. We are aware of this and act accordingly. We are convinced that we are fulfilling an important role in society. However, we also know that football clubs are not vital. As one of the leading clubs in Germany, it is our duty to make the best possible contribution to the future of sport whilst using innovative solutions and valuable partnerships – as quickly and as comprehensible as possible – to drive forward all essential and relevant sustainability issues. In concrete terms, this means: more climate protection in the stadium and in all our spheres of influence, equal and social interaction within our organization and in our value chain as well as acting and doing business responsibly. We use our unique network and our reach to initiate and implement positive changes at all levels.
