Water
Water is an essential resource for Borussia Dortmund, especially for maintaining all the turf at the training facilities and at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. The stadium's catering operations also consume a lot of water. The quality and playability of the pitches depend largely on a water supply that meets demand, which is why responsible water management plays a central role in the club's sustainability strategy.
Borussia Dortmund is pursuing the goal of reducing consumption and increasing efficiency. By 2025/2026, we want to develop a holistic water and wastewater strategy, with the utilization of rainwater and the potential for concrete savings playing an equal role. The establishment of monitoring systems will help us to optimize demand-oriented use and make adjustments where necessary. At the training ground in Dortmund-Brackel, a cistern with a capacity of 300,000 liters is already being used to store rainwater for lawn irrigation.
In cooperation with the Emschergenossenschaft and the city of Dortmund, BVB is currently testing a new drainage system for SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. This system is designed to drain rainwater directly into the Emscher river according to the sponge city principle, thereby relieving the urban sewer system and contributing to the renaturation of the Emscher.
