Water

Water is an essential resource for Borussia Dortmund, particularly for the maintenance of all the pitches at the training grounds and at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. The stadium’s catering operations are also water-intensive. The quality and playability of the pitches depend largely on a water supply that meets their needs, which is why the responsible use of water plays a central role in the club’s sustainability strategy.

Borussia Dortmund aims to reduce consumption and increase efficiency. By the end of the 2026-27 season, we intend to develop a comprehensive water and wastewater strategy, in which the reuse of rainwater and the potential for concrete savings will play an equal role. The introduction of monitoring systems is intended to help us optimise usage in line with demand and make adjustments where necessary. At the training ground in Dortmund-Brackel, a cistern with a capacity of 300,000 litres is already in use to store rainwater for turf irrigation.

In collaboration with the Emschergenossenschaft and the City of Dortmund, BVB is currently assessing a new drainage system for SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. This system is designed to discharge rainwater directly into the River Emscher in accordance with the ‘sponge city’ principle, thereby relieving the burden on the municipal sewer system whilst contributing to the renaturation of the River Emscher.
