Germany beat the Netherlands – Bensebaini scores for Algeria
While Nico Schlotterbeck partnered Antonio Rüdiger at the heart of the defence from the start, Pascal Groß and Waldemar Anton initially took their places among the substitutes on the bench. Following a goalless first period, BVB striker Donyell Malen came on for the Netherlands in the second half – but it was Nico Schlotterbeck who helped bring about the goal threat in the 64th minute: a corner from DFB captain Joshua Kimmich was flicked on by a Tim Kleindienst header into the penalty area and onto the left foot of the Dortmund defender. The ball subsequently bounced several metres backwards into the path of Germany debutant Jamie Leweling, who made it 1-0 from 11 metres out after Schlotterbeck had removed himself from the line of fire.
Waldemar Anton came on for Angelo Stiller in the 82nd minute. Shortly afterwards, Donyell Malen had the opportunity to equalise for the Netherlands: the unmarked Borussia player had a shot from almost 20 metres but was denied by DFB keeper Oliver Baumann. After a mass altercation in stoppage time, Anton and Schlotterbeck were both booked shortly before the final whistle, meaning Schlotterbeck is now suspended for the Bosnia & Herzegovina game in mid-November.
Ramy Bensebaini was also in action on Monday evening: the Dortmund player helped Algeria win an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Togo 1-0 (1-0). Bensebaini, who once again played the full 90 minutes at the heart of defence, scored the winning goal himself when he slotted home from the penalty spot in the 18th minute.
