In honour of Pele – BVB legends to play in Brazil in November

Brazil is celebrating its greatest sporting legend – and BVB will be there to take part. Borussia Dortmund's legends will play against the Flamengo legends in a friendly match in the Brazilian capital Brasilia on 20 November. The match is being held in honour of the Brazilian holiday commemorating the death of football legend Pele.

This year, 19 November has been officially declared “Dia do Rei Pele” (English: "Day of King Pele") in Brazil. Pele, who passed away in 2022, scored his 1,000th goal with a penalty for Santos in their game against Vasco at the Maracana Stadium on this day in 1969. The match between the Flamengo Legends and the BVB Legends will take place on 20 November 2024 as part of the celebrations.

Led by coaches Jörg Heinrich and Teddy de Beer, World Cup winners, Bundesliga champions and DFB-Pokal winners such as Roman Weidenfeller, Kevin Grosskreutz and Jan Koller will travel to Brazil to represent Borussia Dortmund. The squad includes seven Brazilians: Champions League winner Julio Cesar, 2002 title winners Dede, Evanilson, Ewerthon and Marcio Amoroso, as well as Felipe Santana and Tinga will travel to Brasilia with the Borussia team.

The match in honour of Pele will take place on 20 November in the largest stadium in the capital city of Brasilia, the Estádio Nacional de Brasília Mané Garrincha. The two teams of legends will compete against each other in front of more than 50,000 fans. The match is also being held as part of the celebrations for 200 years of German immigration to Brazil: At a special event honouring individuals who have contributed to strengthening relations between Brazil and Germany, Hans-Joachim Watzke, CEO of Borussia Dortmund, and Thomas Westphal, Lord Mayor of the City of Dortmund, will be among those honoured. Benedikt Scholz (Director of Internationalisation & Commercial Partnerships), Sascha Fligge (Director of Communications) and Marc Lingenhoff (Managing Director BVB Americas) will attend the ceremony as representatives.

We would like to thank our main sponsor Evonik for their support in connection with the Legends match.
