U19 the outsiders against Madrid: "We have nothing to lose"
"This will be a great experience and a big sporting challenge for our young team. Real also has an exceptional team at youth level," says coach Mike Tullberg. With four points from the first two games against Club Brugge (1-1) and Celtic (4-0), his players are placed ninth in the table and on course for a place in the round of 16. After their 1-0 opening win against VfB Stuttgart, the elite team from the Spanish metropolis suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat at OSC Lille and are in 20th place in the table. The two teams are meeting for the sixth time in the Youth League and have an even record: both sides have won twice, with one draw, while eleven goals have been scored and conceded on both ends.
"Madrid are determined to win the UEFA Youth League this season," says Tullberg, who has spoken to VfB Stuttgart U19 coach Nico Willig. "He told me about the difference in class in the game at Real," revealed the BVB coach. The defeat against a very strong Lille side," was a slip-up. The Spaniards are taking the clash with the Black & Yellows extremely seriously and rested their entire squad in the match against Fuenlabrada at the weekend. They have won all seven games in the league so far with a goal difference of 26 scored and four conceded
Mike Tullberg, for his part, is working on a line-up that can stand up to Madrid. He proudly points to the fact that Borussia Dortmund, with an average age of 16.8 years, has been the youngest of all participating U19 teams in the new DFB Youth League so far, and BVB are ranked fifth in the same metric for the UEFA Youth League. "But it's also about having quality on the pitch at European level. Despite the very positive overall development, we still lack stability," he notes.
UEFA regulation causing headaches
His youngsters showed flashes of their exceptional footballing talent in the 3-3 derby draw against Schalke 04, particularly in the first half, but also squandered a 3-1 lead and paid the price for silly mistakes. Mike Tullberg is therefore hoping for one or two reinforcements "from above", which will depend on the composition of the first team's matchday squad, in which Almugera Kabar, Cole Campbell and Kjell Wätjen were recently included. He is most likely to be able to count on defensive lynchpin Filippo Mane.
To make matters worse for the U19s, UEFA regulations stipulate that 14 squad places are reserved exclusively for players who have been with the club for at least two years. This means that Tullberg is not allowed to include some of the players who have move to BVB in this timeframe (including Luca Reggiani, Samuele Inacio, Thierry Tidjeu-Tazemeta, Taycan Ectibasi, Nick Cherny, Mathis Albert, Luca Riedl, Ousmane Diallo and Pharell Kegni).
"That doesn't make things any easier, especially as we've also lost players who have been in training, like Paris Brunner, Charles Herrmann and Fritz Fleck. We're the clear underdogs, we have nothing to lose and we are flying to Madrid in good spirits. We've already surprised everyone in the Youth League after all," said Tullberg.
The refereeing team are from Poland and will be led by Damian Kos.
