BVB Legends lose to Flamengo Legends despite good chances
BVB fell 1-0 behind in the 19th minute following a low shot from the Brazilian Beto. But the Black & Yellows hit back – and levelled the scoring in the 30th minute through Marcio Amoroso's neat header after great build-up work from Evanilson.
The second period proved to be an even encounter in the oppressive heat. Toni da Silva, who put in an incredible hard-running performance, spurned the chance to take the lead in the 47th minute. Instead, the opposition did so: Marcos Dene fired home another low shot to make it 2-1 in the 53rd minute.
It was end to end, with goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller particularly standing out. He made a stunning save to stop Beto from making it 3-1 in the 55th minute. Then, five minutes later, the shot-stopper made another intervention to keep out a placed penalty from André Gomes, which was awarded for a foul. A turbulent final phase saw Borussia Dortmund create numerous chances to turn the game around. Lucas Barrios was denied by the opposition goalie in the 65th minute. Jan Koller then nodded the ball narrowly wide of goal. In between, Weidenfeller had another opportunity to showcase his outstanding ability when he saved a shot that was difficult to stop.
The applause from the crowd was the deserved reward for a very good performance from the team led by player coach Jörg Heinrich, who marshalled the defence well and posed major difficulties for the opposition strikers.
