Match Report
Successful start to second half-season for BVB women
The BVB women welcomed Iserlohn to Stadion Rote Erde in optimal weather conditions on the first Sunday of Advent. The hosts had the game under control from the beginning in front of more than 1,000 spectators. Following their 3-1 defeat in the opening round of the Westfalenliga, coach Thomas Sulewski's charges had a score to settle. The Dortmund ladies immediately applied lots of pressure in the opening minutes and quickly created their first chances. A free-kick from Paula Reimann from a good 20 metres out flew only narrowly wide of the upright. In the ninth minute, Marjana Naceva rose higher than her marker and headed a cross by Hannah Geldschläger from the right flank into the far corner.
In the period that followed, the Black & Yellows allowed their visitors slightly more of an opportunity to get into the game but continued to control the match. Iserlohn registered a shot from distance that sailed narrowly over Sandra Schröer's goal midway through the first period, but otherwise the Dortmund goal did not come under threat. The Borussia ladies turned the heat back up at the end of the first half and pressed for a second goal. But they could not take their chances and took in a 1-0 lead at the break.
BVB continued where they had left off once play resumed after the interval and did not let up. Although the game was slightly more even and the visitors got a glimpse of the Borussia penalty area more often, their defensive ranks were solid and succeeded in defending against Iserlohn's attacks. The biggest chance for Dortmund to extend their lead to 2-0 fell to striker Sarah Giebels, who had fallen to the ground following a foul in the penalty area and stepped up to take the resultant spot-kick herself. However, Giebels was denied by Iserlohn goalkeeper Juliane Bauch, who managed to save the shot.
In the 80th minute, Marah Tayeh succeeded in doubling the advantage to 2-0. The winger latched onto a long pass and dribbled past the goalkeeper in the box before slotting the ball into an empty net to complete the scoring at 2-0.
Coach Sulewski was highly satisfied with his team's performance at the final whistle: "It was a very strong performance from us for 90 minutes. We knew what awaited us but also prepared in such a way that we did not want to let there be a repeat of what happened in the reverse fixture. It became slightly more even in the second period. But I believe that we were very dominant, good in the challenges, very passionate and had a good balance between on the ball and off the ball. We're very happy that we won the match. We wanted to stay in top spot in the table and confirm our home run. We've done that and are super satisfied about it."
