09 Black & Yellow moments in 2024 – Part 2

A year full of Black & Yellow memories is drawing to a close. We look back at some special moments on and off the pitch. In the second of our three chapters, the departure of Marco Reus, the 50th birthday of the stadium and the promotion of the table tennis team are the focal points. (Click here to read Part 1.).

Dortmund boy. Black & Yellow legend – Marco Reus’ final home game

"I don’t and did not like being the centre of attention, that’s my nature," said Marco Reus prior to his final home game with BVB at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. But he had no other choice. As the teams ran out onto the pitch, the BVB fans displayed a choreography featuring an oversized shirt with the No. 11 and the caption: "Thank you, Marco!" In his 294th and final Bundesliga appearance in a 12-year spell with the Black & Yellows, he bade farewell with a goal against Darmstadt (a beautifully converted free-kick). During the goal celebrations, he was lifted into the air by his team-mates. In the 82nd minute, Reus was substituted to applause from the entire stadium and a guard of honour from his team-mates. "It was the last game for me at home – I wanted to enjoy it and am unbelievably grateful for the love that people have shown for me in the last years. I hope I was able to give something back," he said.

The stadium turns 50 years old

The most beautiful stadium in the world is now 50 years old. The big party with numerous activities came four days after the anniversary (2 April 1974) at the game against VfB Stuttgart. The team took to the field in a special shirt, the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra played the 'Triumph March' live, a birthday guard of honour welcomed the players, women’s players from the first match in the then newly built Westfalenstadion accompanied the team onto the pitch and the fans created a choreography across all the stands of SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. BVB lost the match because Serhou Guirassy – still a VfB Stuttgart player at the time – converted one of the few counter-attacking chances to seal a 1-0 win for the visitors. "It was an extraordinarily good atmosphere up until the 99th minute, in part because the fans could sense we invested everything, really everything," said head coach Edin Terzic.

The table-tennis team celebrate Bundesliga promotion

The table-tennis team defended top spot in the 2. Bundesliga with a hard-fought 5-5 draw in their final match of the season against TTC OE Bad Homburg 1987. It was 23-year-old Kirill Fadeev who spectacularly turned around a 5-4 deficit and got the point that decided the title. The table-tennis team were 2. Bundesliga champions for the third time after 2002 and 2010. On the occasion of their third title triumph, they exercised their right to be promoted: the Black & Yellows are competing in the TTBL for the first time in the club’s history. A good 1,000 spectators attended the first Table Tennis Bundesliga home game at the Brügmann-Halle. Borussia were very narrowly beaten by ASV Grünwettersbach.
