BVB women win final match of the year
The BVB women approached the match in Herford with plenty of attacking intent and put the ball in the back of the net for the first time in the 12th minute. Captain Marie Grothe intercepted an attempted clearance from opposition goalie Leni Heibrock outside the box and lobbed it over the goalie to put BVB in front. "We immediately dominated the game; we dominated the ball and our opponents in the first half. We were also super clinical and scored our goals virtually every 10 minutes," said coach Thomas Sulewski.
It was striker Sarah Giebels who extended the lead to two goals in the 21st minute. Giebels slotted a low cross from Mia Bedarf on the left flank past the goalkeeper and into the net. A free-kick from the edge of the penalty area by Paula Reimann then brought about the goal that made it 3-0. Grothe got a slight touch to the ball with her head, but it was the foot of a Herford player in front of the goal that turned the ball into the net. Shortly before the break, Marjana Naceva made it 4-0 courtesy of a remarkable long-range shot (43rd minute). She received the ball around 20 metres from goal, went past a Herford defender with a feint and then fired into the top left-hand corner.
After the interval, the home team posed a threat in front of goal for the first time but Dortmund's custodian Sandra Schröer intervened and saved a shot from inside the penalty area. Herford got a better foothold in the game in the opening five minutes of the second half but Giebels put an end to the opposition's resurgence by scoring her second goal of the day. In the 58th minute, she intercepted a failed backpass and slotted into the far corner to make it 5-0. The Belgian-born striker then increased the lead to 6-0 only two minutes later, this time slotting home on the rebound after Nora Willeke had struck the post. The final goal was scored by Madita Sommer in the 77th minute. After a corner-kick was taken short, Bedarf's cross landed at the feet of the ice-cold Sommer, who was left with a simple finish.
"At half-time, we were operating under the assumption that our opponents would ease off a little and that we could do something for our goal difference in the second half. We did that well until the seventh goal, then we spurned a few chances in abject fashion. But all in all, it was a very successful and very decent performance by our team against a deep-lying opponent," said Sulewski, drawing a positive conclusion.
The Westfalenliga fixtures for 2024 are now complete. The Black & Yellows will head into the winter break in first place in the table and with a one-point lead over second place. The BVB women still have the group phase of the Indoor City Championship in the Nette-Halle coming up on 29/12.
