BVB and RWE install PV system on the stadium roof

Borussia Dortmund and RWE have agreed on a six-year partnership. In particular, as a "Premium & Sustainability Partner", RWE will develop and implement a sustainable energy optimisation concept at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK.

A core component is the modernisation and expansion of the photovoltaic (PV) system on the stadium roof. With more than 9,500 new solar modules and an output of more than 4.2 megawatts peak, the largest stadium in Germany will also have the largest PV system on a stadium roof in the country in the future. Thanks to its coupling with a battery storage system of 3.4 megawatt hours, climate-friendly electricity will be available even when the sun is not shining. In mathematical terms, the green electricity generated annually on the roof covers more than all the BVB home games – from the Bundesliga to the DFB-Pokal and the UEFA Champions League – consume in the same period. Any surplus electricity that is generated is fed into the power grid.

RWE and BVB previously installed a new PV system with more than 200 solar modules on the roof of the BVB FanWorld, which is next to the stadium, in April 2024. Thanks to the new PV systems, BVB are reducing their energy costs by generating more of their own electricity. Further energy projects at BVB are set to be developed jointly during the course of the partnership.

Hans-Joachim Watzke, Chairman of the Board of Management at BVB: "We're delighted to welcome RWE as they take their place by our side as a new partner. This collaboration is an important step for us to further advance our sustainable development with future-oriented projects. Together, we want to make our contribution to climate protection and promote innovative energy solutions. Borussia Dortmund and RWE share the same vision for a responsible and sustainable future."

Markus KrebberChairman of the Board at RWE AG: "‘We are really looking forward to working with BVB, a club from the region that possesses international appeal. Together, we want to make Germany's largest football stadium climate-friendly by expanding the solar energy on the roof and utilising it efficiently. BVB and RWE are two great teams that complement each other perfectly in the pursuit of their sustainability goals."
