Gittens doubles numbers, Duranville makes first start

After an extraordinarily poor first half during which they fell 3-0 behind, Borussia Dortmund rallied towards the end and sensed an equaliser was on the cards – but ultimately came up short and suffered a deserved defeat at the hands of a passionate and effective Kiel side. The facts of the match.

False start: BVB have lost the first two Bundesliga matches of a calendar year for the first time in a quarter of a century. The last time this happened was at the beginning of this millennium.

Double numbers: Jamie Gittens has now already been involved in twice as many goals (10) as he was in the entirety of last season. With seven goals, Gittens is the joint-top scorer along with Serhou Guirassy and has the most scorer points in the team with his three assists.

Substitute Reyna strikes: After drawing a blank last season, Giovanni Reyna has now taken his goal tally to two this term. He had previously scored in the game against Hoffenheim on Matchday 14.

First start: Having already made seven substitute appearances (four this season), Julien Duranville made the starting XI for a Bundesliga match for the first time (he had already done this in the Champions League against Barcelona).
