Match Report
U23s lose in Osnabrück
Scenario: The Black & Yellows travelled to Osnabrück on the back of two home defeats. The struggle for goals has been particularly disappointing: although they have already scored 37 goals this season, Dortmund are currently going through a goal drought. The Black & Yellows failed to score in their defeats against Arminia Bielefeld (4-0) and Hansa Rostock (2-0). VfL Osnabrück, meanwhile, are riding a small wave of euphoria after a rather unsuccessful first half of the season. Under new coach Marco Antwerpen, the third VfL coach in the current season, the team placed 18th in the 3. Liga are still unbeaten, picking up 11 points from five games.
Personnel matters: Compared to the 2-0 defeat to Hansa Rostock, U23 coach Jan Zimmermann made three changes to his starting XI. In attack, Rodney Elongo-Yombo and Antonio Foti started in place of Babis Drakas and Kjell Wätjen, who was on the bench with the first team on Saturday and not in the squad in Osnabrück. In addition, the experienced centre-back Filippo Mane took over the right-back position. The 19-year-old moved into the team for Danylo Krevsun. New signing Tony Reitz was in the U23 squad for the first time.
The match: Dortmund started the game applying a lot of pressure, playing with enormous vigour and aggression against the ball. Osnabrück were initially shaken by this and needed a little time to get into the game. After ten minutes, the home side had found their feet and made their first statement. The Black & Yellows failed to clear a cross, allowing Marcus Müller to shoot on the volley from about 11 metres out. However, BVB keeper Marcel Lotka got down well to make the save.
The home side's first big chance was followed by a setback for Dortmund: defender Mane had to be substituted off with an injury after just under a quarter of an hour, with Niklas Jessen coming on in his place. BVB were unfazed by this, however, and now got down to business in front of 14,388 fans, earning corner after corner that VfL could only clear through a combination of graft and good fortune. The woodwork came to the rescue of the team in purple and white on three occasions. Firstly, VfL goalkeeper Lukas Jonsson forced a deflected ball onto his own crossbar following a corner kick. The subsequent corner kick was even more dangerous: Paulina first headed against the bar from close range before a scramble in the Osnabrück goalmouth. The ball flew up to Lührs, who could only hit the post with his header (17).
The game then levelled out a little. Dortmund stood deep and allowed the home side to have the ball. However, Osnabrück struggled to find any gaps against the Black & Yellows' tight defence. BVB were also too imprecise in their attacking endeavours. Both teams lacked ideas, creativity and penetration. The teams went into the break at 0-0.
The second half began with a promising situation for BVB: Michael Eberwein crossed from the left to the edge of the penalty area, where Paulina was brought down by Niklas Kölle. Referee Jarno Wienefeld blew his whistle and showed the Osnabrück left-back a yellow card. The resulting free-kick was blocked by the wall (49).
It was Kölle of all people who gave the home side the lead a good ten minutes later. First Ben Hüning blocked a shot from the 25-year-old with a strong sliding tackle to send the ball out for a corner. Shortly afterwards, the ball sailed through the Dortmund penalty area and landed at the second post for Niklas Wiemann, who headed in to make it 1-0 for the Purple & Whites (61).
The Black & Yellows were caught off guard by the goal, and they then struggled to make their mark on the game. Coach Zimmermann responded by bringing on a fresh attacking force in Babis Drakas. But even with Drakas on the pitch, Dortmund remained as toothless in attack as in their last two games and failed to penetrate the Osnabrück backline. The introduction of Paul-Philip Besong, Prince Aning and Tony Reitz, who made his debut in a BVB shirt, did little to change this.
BVB were running out of time - and Aning's moment came out of nowhere. In the 97th minute, a cross found the substitute, who volleyed from close range. But Jonsson was on hand to prevent the late equaliser with a world-class reflex save. Before that, Osnabrück's Joel Zwarts had missed a great opportunity to put the game to bed from a counter-attack.
Coach Jan Zimmermann: "We gave a really good away performance until they went 1-0 up. We were also in control of the game in the first few minutes of the second half, perhaps without really having any great goal threat. We had problems after going behind, but we still had a great chance to equalise at the end. The boys gave everything."
