Niko Kovac begins work at BVB – official presentation on Tuesday

Niko Kovac has commenced his duties as head coach of Borussia Dortmund. The 53-year-old, who recently signed a contract with BVB until the summer of 2026, arrived at the training ground in Dortmund-Brackel early on Sunday morning. Together with his assistant coaches Robert Kovac and Filip Tapalovic, Kovac is expected to lead Borussia back towards the Champions League places in the remaining 14 Bundesliga matches this season.

The day after Borussia's important 2-1 win away to 1. FC Heidenheim, the mood in the Black & Yellows camp was relaxed. Kovac met his new colleagues early in the morning and then greeted the players from the first-team squad. The players who had started against FCH the day before completed a relaxed regeneration session in the training centre. Niko Kovac and his team immediately got to work on the pitch with the players who didn't start on Saturday.

After a short speech from the new head coach, the two assistant coaches took control of the drills. The Borussia players, who included Nico Schlotterbeck, who is currently suspended, began with a fast-paced possession game in a confined space. This was followed by drills on crossing and finishing before moving on to another game.

Niko Kovac observed his charges from the sidelines, repeatedly giving tips and comments during the breaks. After an intensive hour-and-a-half, the coaching team wrapped up their first session in Black & Yellow.

The new BVB coach has five more days to familiarise himself and prepare for his first competitive match. Niko Kovac's debut is scheduled for next Saturday (15:30 CET) when Borussia Dortmund host VfB Stuttgart, a direct competitor for Champions League qualification, at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK.

The official press conference to introduce Niko Kovac will take place on Tuesday - also at 15:30 CET. BVB-TV will broadcast the Croatian's inaugural presser live on YouTube.
