In memory of Mehmet Kubaşık: BVB and Nordstadtliga send a message

The Mehmet-Kubaşık Cup was held for the fourth time last Wednesday in Dortmund's Nordstadt district. As part of the Bundesliga home match against VfL Wolfsburg, the winning team was honoured on the edge of the pitch in front of the South Stand.

Dortmund kiosk operator Mehmet Kubaşık was remembered, with his family present at the stadium and also taking part in the tribute. Kubaşık was shot dead in his kiosk on Mallinckrodtstrasse in April 2006 by members of the far-right terrorist network National Socialist Underground (NSU).

In his memory, the Nordstadtliga organised the Cup in 2022 together with his family. This year, a total of 150 children and young people played in 16 different, partly mixed teams to determine the winner. As a special gesture and motivation, BVB captain Emre Can sent a small message to all tournament participants and Mehmet Kubaşık's family in advance.

"It means a lot to us that the team and BVB have thought of my father and what this tournament stands for. This support sends a strong signal of solidarity, respect and remembrance," said Gamze Kubaşık on the sidelines of the award ceremony at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK.
