From 1954 to 2023: BVB's visits to the USA at a glance

Borussia Dortmund have already visited the United States several times in the club's history – the first time was back in 1954. Here we cast a glance back over the previous trips to the USA, ahead of the Black & Yellows' sixth flight across the pond to take part in the FIFA Club World Cup.

1954: First visit to the USA
BVB's first trip to the USA back in May 1954 lasted for several weeks. Their opponents in North America included the likes of Plymouth Argyle and Chelsea (both from England), the American team Ohio All Stars and Fortuna Düsseldorf, who had also flown to the USA from Germany. BVB contested two matches against the Rhineland outfit. The 6-0 defeat in New York was part of a major sporting event organised by the German American Football Association. BVB won their second clash with Fortuna in Wisconsin by a 6-2 scoreline. They also faced Plymouth Argyle twice: once at Soldier Field in Chicago (4-0), which the Black & Yellows later visited several times, and once in Los Angeles (3-1), with many Hollywood stars reportedly among the 15,000 spectators. The top scorers on the trip included Adi Preißler, Alfred Niepieklo and Hans Flügel.

2018: Short trip to Los Angeles
Following the end of the 2017/18 season, BVB spent several days in California and contested a friendly against the newly founded MLS club Los Angeles FC during their time in the state. That match in May 2018 took place in the newly opened Banc of California Stadium and ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

2018: Participation in the International Champions Cup (ICC)
In July 2018, Borussia Dortmund took part in the International Champions Cup – a series of international friendly matches in a tournament format – and played three games in the USA. On their return to Solider Field in Chicago, the team defeated Manchester City 1-0. BVB then beat Liverpool 3-1 in Charlotte and concluded the trip with a match against Benfica in Pittsburgh. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, with the resulting penalty shootout to decide the match won by the Portuguese.

2019: Swift return
The Black & Yellows won the first match of the trip against the Seattle Sounders – the champions of the US in 2016 – 3-1 in Seattle, before running out 3-2 victors against Liverpool. The two clubs contested the first football match ever played in the 77,000-capacity Notre Dame Stadium, which is located on the campus of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend in the US state of Indiana.

2023: Return under the motto "Back in Black & Yellow"
After an enforced break due to the pandemic, Borussia Dortmund returned to the USA in the summer of 2023. As part of a training camp in San Diego, California, BVB went up against local club San Diego Loyal and won 6-0. That victory was followed by two friendly fixtures against English Premier League clubs Manchester United and Chelsea. BVB won 3-2 against the ‘Red Devils’ in Las Vegas, while the match against the ‘Blues’ ended in a 1-1 draw. Overall, it was BVB's third match at Soldier Field in Chicago.
