Tradition meets class: BVB legends enjoy a special match at Real Madrid's Bernabeu

Borussia Dortmund’s legends played out an exciting 3-3 in front of over 75,000 enthusiastic spectators at Real Madrid’s legendary Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday evening at the 12th edition of the traditional Corazón Classic Match. The focus was not on the result, but rather on an eventful weekend dedicated to football, friendship and social commitment. Some of the biggest names in football history took to the pitch.

The delegation from Borussia Dortmund had travelled to the Spanish capital on Friday. After checking in at the team hotel, the first highlight on the agenda came that very evening: a dinner together at the Bernabeu with the Real Madrid executives. Legends and representatives from the club tours exchanged ideas in a relaxed atmosphere.

Preparations for the big game began on Saturday morning: after a hearty breakfast, the team went to the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, where the special atmosphere of the Corazón Classic Match could already be felt during the warm-up. Footballing royalty from days gone by gathered on the pitch: the Real side featured world stars such as Iker Casillas, Toni Kroos, Pepe, Marcelo and Raphaël Varane – and their class lit up the stadium once again.

In the 3-3 draw, the BVB team including legends such as Weidenfeller, Großkreutz, Barrios and Sokratis showed great commitment and gave Real a true test in a close contest. After the Real legends took the lead early, Sven Bender equalized for the Black & Yellows in the 16th minute. Lucas Barrios turned the game to give BVB a 2-1 lead on 22 minutes before the hosts equalized, and the sides went into the break level at 2-2. Shortly after changing sides, Real took the lead again – this time thanks to a remarkable diving header from Real’s former marksman Raul, getting on the end of a corner. But the BVB refused to lie down – and were rewarded for their efforts, when Marcio Amoroso scored a well-deserved equalizer shortly before the final whistle in the 87th minute. With a little more luck in front of goal, the Black & Yellows could even have won the match.

The day was rounded off with both sides coming together for dinner, when all involved revelled in discussions of the game once again. Memories were shared and new friendships made – very much in keeping with the event, the proceeds of which will help social projects of the Real Madrid Foundation.
