Winter preparation: BVB women are back in training
Despite light rain and temperatures above freezing, there is great anticipation for the challenges ahead, so BVB women's team kicked off the new year with a training session on Monday morning. The training camp began with performance diagnostics on the training grounds in Dortmund Brackel. The first joint training will take place on Tuesday at Hoeschpark. On Thursday, coach Markus Högner's team will travel to Nuremberg, where they will play their first friendly against the women's team of 1. FC Nürnberg at the weekend (17 January, 12:00 CET, Nürnberger Sportpark Valznerweiher).
“The initial focus is on getting off to a good start after the winter break and getting used to the ball again,” the coach explained. “In addition, there will be strength training tests before Saturday's match against the women's Bundesliga team from Nuremberg.” Since the regular season for the BVB women doesn't start until 15 March, the team have many busy weeks ahead with more friendlies to be played. Markus Högner: “With SV Meppen we will face the currently third-placed women's team in the 2. Frauen-Bundesliga, while 1. FC Magdeburg are one of the top teams in the Regionalliga North East.”
Eventful first half of the season
The training conditions and upcoming friendlies underscore the optimal circumstances from which the BVB players are benefiting during the winter preparations. At the same time, they look back on a successful of the first half of the season, which they concluded in second place in the Regionalliga West. Besides huge wins and highlights such as the DFB Pokal match against FC Bayern Munich in a sold-out Rote Erde Stadium, they also had to deal with setbacks and injury-related long-term absences like that of striker Dana Marquardt.
Markus Högner summarises: “Players, coaches and staff, have grown into a cohesive unit. We have scored the most goals in the league and conceded the fewest. Those are things that we can build on.” The fact that the team have also dropped valuable points in important matches is, according to the head coach, an issue that will be addressed in the coming weeks: “It's clear that we at Borussia Dortmund are always under pressure – that's part of the game. That makes it all the more important to be even more resilient in the Regionalliga.”
Before the Black & Yellows will travel to face the women of Borussia Mönchengladbach II for the league in March (15 March, 12:00 CET, Sports Facility Am Haus Lütz), further friendlies are scheduled in addition to the earlier mentioned games. Click here for an overview.
