Kovac: “We want to reach the round of 16 through the play-offs!”

For the first time in club history, Borussia Dortmund have qualified for the knock-out stage of Europe's premier club competition for the fourth consecutive year, adding another chapter to their already impressive record – their tenth consecutive appearance in the UEFA Champions League. However, coach Niko Kovac's team narrowly missed out on home advantage in the play-off second leg against Bayer Leverkusen or Atalanta for entry into the round of 16 (draw on Friday), due to their 2-0 away defeat at Inter Milan.

“Actually, it was a typical 0-0 game, that we lost,” said the head coach about a game that can be summed up in one sentence: “It was a tough game from the first to the last minute from both teams, with few highlights.” His team must pull off a good result at home in the play-offs on 17 or 18 February. The decision regarding qualification for the round of 16 will be made the following week in Leverkusen or in Bergamo. Last year, BVB had home advantage in the second leg (0-0), but the foundation for progressing was laid earlier with a 3-0 away win at Sporting Lisbon. And in the round of 16, Borussia Dortmund only managed a 1-1 draw at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK against OSC Lille, but they won the return match in France with 2-1. Kovac is therefore quite relaxed about the situation.

“Back then, you had the away goals rule. It was much more important then. But yes, I would have preferred for us to play the return match at home. It is what it is. We want to reach the round of 16 through the play-offs.” A draw would have meant 16th place and matches against Leverkusen or Olympiakos; a home win against Inter would have seen Borussia finish in 12th place. The other pair would then have been AS Monaco/Qarabag FK. “What's so frustrating is that we got off to a really good start in the Champions League, but only managed one point from the last four games,” Kovac explained: “That definitely ruined our chances of a better finish. We definitely could have finished higher up. What's important now is to perform better in the next two games – against whoever it will be.”

The personnel situation will certainly have improved then. “We only had four outfield players on the bench because we didn't have anyone else,” the coach said with regard to the few players he had available on Wednesday against Milan. Looking ahead to the second half of the season, this will change. Salih Özcan can be written down for the play-offs (instead of Pascal Groß); Marcel Sabitzer, Niklas Süle and Waldemar Anton, will also be available again shortly. UEFA have yet to announce what the suspension will be of Daniel Svensson, due to a controversial red card. Kovac emphasises: “We have a good, broad squad, that can compete in both competitions.”
