Post-Match Report

Crossing king Ryerson with four assists

Three headed goals in one half for the first time in 22 years, four in total in the match, which is historic. And: 51 points after 22 matchdays – Borussia Dortmund have only had more at this stage of the season in the 2010/11 title-winning campaign, when they had 52 points. Facts about the 4-0 win against Mainz and the season so far.

Heads up: Borussia Dortmund last scored three headed goals in one half on 1 May 2004 in a 4-1 win over Hansa Rostock, also in the first half by Ahmed Madouni, Ewerthon and, of course, Jan Koller. BVB scored four headed goals in a Bundesliga match for the first time since records began in 1992.

Biggest win: The 4-0 win against Mainz, BVB's 15th win of the season, is their most resounding scoreline so far.

Goalscorer: Serhou Guirassy scored his 75th goal in his 122nd Bundesliga appearance – only seven players have achieved this faster in the history of the league, led by Harry Kane, who scored his 75th goal in his 73rd game. With his 11th goal of the season, Guirassy moved up to third place in the scoring charts. No other player has scored more than his six goals in 2026. This season, he scored at least two goals in a game for the third time.

Also a goalscorer: For Maximilian Beier, the goal to make it 2-0 was already his seventh of the season and his first headed goal of the season.

Crossing king: Julian Ryerson provided four assists in a Bundesliga match for the first time. He now has six assists in the last three games and 11 in the entire season. Only Munich's Michael Olise has set up more goals for his team (16) in the league.

Early lead: The last time the Black & Yellows led by such a margin at half-time (3-0) was in December 2024 in Wolfsburg. And the last time they were 2-0 up after a quarter of an hour was in September 2023.

Strong set pieces: BVB have scored from a corner in each of their last four games. No other club have scored more than eight goals from corners. Nine of BVB's last 13 goals have come from set pieces.

Clean sheet: As in the reverse fixture (a 2-0 win), BVB kept a clean sheet – for the 11th time this season!

The run continues: Borussia Dortmund have lost only one of their last 30 (!) Bundesliga games and have scored at least one goal in each of those 30 games.

Back again: Ramy Bensebaini was in the starting line-up for the first time since Matchday 14, despite suffering from a slight infection. Two months ago, in the 1-1 draw in Freiburg in mid-December, he scored Dortmund's only goal. The Algerian then played for his country in the Africa Cup of Nations and was subsequently absent for health reasons. This year, Bensebaini had only played two minutes as a substitute until the match against Mainz. He crowned his comeback to the starting line-up with the goal that made it 4-0.

No. 1 at home: BVB have won nine of their 11 league games at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK so far this season, leading the home table and being the only team yet to lose at home.

Number 1 in 2026: After a 3-3 draw in Frankfurt at the start of the year, Borussia Dortmund have won six Bundesliga games in a row and are top of the table for the 2026 calendar year.

Welcome back: After a minor slump with four games without a win (two defeats, two draws) from May 2023 to November 2024, BVB prevailed in the last three encounters with 1. FSV Mainz 05, extending the overall record to 23 wins and ten draws with only seven defeats.
