Post-Match Report

Reactions: “People are going home happy, and we'll keep at it!”

Sporting director Sebastian Kehl, head coach Niko Kovac, Julian Brandt, Waldemar Anton and Julian Ryerson spoke about the 4-0 win against Mainz. Reactions to the match.

Sebastian Kehl (in the mixed zone): “Set pieces are always good. They can decide games like this. I’m particularly pleased with the first half. We were very efficient. But it’s also good to just score four goals and not concede any. People are going home happy, and we’ll keep at it.”

Niko Kovac (on RTL): “We’re happy, we’re delighted with the win. It was hard-earned. The first half was evenly balanced, but we were more efficient. We steered the game in the right direction with our set pieces. We then controlled the second half. We had a few more chances, but a 4-0 win – especially without conceding – is very good. Everyone has a role to play in set pieces, and at the moment the lads are doing really well. When the balls come in like that, it’s difficult for any team to defend. I’m delighted that all the hard work we’ve put in during set-piece training is paying off. We’re keeping an eye on the rear-view mirror because the other teams are also playing well and having success.”

Julian Ryerson (on Sky): “It was nice to take an early lead again, score the second quickly and then get the third before half-time. Four goals give you a good feeling. I have to get the ball on target and the others have to run to it. The blockers are also doing a good job. When we score a goal (from a set piece, ed.), it’s not just down to my assist or the goalscorer, it’s several people.”

Waldemar Anton (in the mixed zone): “We had a lot of control in the game. In the second half, we managed it a bit, saved some energy, but continued to be active up front. The 4-0 result is fair in the end. Knowing what lies ahead of us in the coming weeks, we gave a few per cent less, to be honest.”

Julian Brandt (on RTL): “We were very dangerous from set pieces. In the second half, it was less spectacular, but all the more secure. We place a lot of importance on set pieces, and we knew after the first half of the season that we still had potential there. Both the target players and the corner takers are doing a good job at the moment. Goals from set pieces often open the scoring for us in a game. Today, against Wolfsburg, and also in one or two other games before that.”
