Post-Match Report

Sebastian Kehl: “We can win games like this too.”

Sporting director Sebastian Kehl, head coach Niko Kovac, Felix Nmecha, who set up the winning goal, debutant Luca Reggiani and Julian Brandt, who scored the first goal, spoke about the 2-1 win at VfL Wolfsburg. Reactions to the match.

Sebastian Kehl (in the mixed zone): “I was very happy with the first half. We really dominated, created a lot of chances and hardly allowed them anything. We didn't start the second half so well, and after the equaliser it was an open game. We lost control then. But we fought our way back and were rewarded for our courage. It was a deserved victory, which also shows that the team believes in itself until the end and has the quality to win games like this. The fact that we have turned games around in recent weeks is also a strength. We see that as a very positive sign for the team.”

Niko Kovac (at the press conference): “It was a very intense game from both teams today. We dominated the first half and VfL dominated the second. All in all, we played really well in the first half, kept the pressure on our opponents and didn't allow them many chances, but perhaps we should have gone into the break with a second goal. After that, we did exactly what we didn't want to do. We slowed the game down, we lost possession too easily, and our opponents switched gears immediately after winning the ball. This gave VfL a lot of great chances. My team then showed their mentality and still managed to win the game thanks to their quality and a bit of luck. What Felix Nmecha, Fabio Silva and Serhou Guirassy did at the end was truly spectacular.”

Kovac on the winning goal: “Great cinema”

Felix Nmecha (on BVB TV): “We controlled the game, but we also had phases where things weren't going so well. Wolfsburg changed something in the second half. We adjusted after a while and then things got better again. It's great that Serhou (Guirassy, ed.) scored the goal for us at the end. It's an important victory.”

Julian Brandt (in the mixed zone): “I'm very relieved, especially when you look at how the game went. We were too slow in the second half. In my opinion, Wolfsburg deserved to equalise. But we still had confidence because we've often managed to score goals in the last ten minutes or score last-minute goals this season. Sometimes you just need individual quality to do that, and we have that. Our second goal was a well-worked goal. Felix (Nmecha, ed.), Fabio (Silva) and Serhou did really, really well.”

Luca Reggiani (on BVB TV): “I'm very happy. It's a dream come true for me. I'm very, very happy. Yesterday, the coach said to me: ‘You're in the squad.’ And today I made my debut.”
