Interview
“I am someone who needs goals in life” – Interview with new signing Ricarda Walkling
Ricarda, after more than six years at Werder Bremen, you're moving to Borussia Dortmund. What convinced you to sign to BVB starting this summer?
Definitely Dortmund’s plan and the goals they want to achieve in the coming years, which are impressive. Borussia Dortmund are a big club in Germany. That’s why I'm happy and very proud to soon be a part of it.
When you moved to Werder Bremen, you said you listened to your gut feeling. Who or what did you listen to this time? My gut feeling again. I always make such decisions based on my gut feeling. I listen to my instincts, but also to the people close to me of course.
You’ve been a familiar face in the Bundesliga for many years. Now, at least in terms of league position, you’re taking a step back. Why are you still pursuing this path?
I would only see it as a step backwards in terms of league standing. It’s a fantastic club with highly professional conditions and a superb team. I’m simply looking forward to training and playing here. And if you set yourself high goals, things will soon look different in terms of league standings.
It’s still unclear whether you’ll be playing in the 2nd Bundesliga or the Regionalliga. Why are you so convinced whether the move to BVB was the right one?
It’s the feeling that everyone in charge has given me. I’m really eager to be able to make a difference and to be allowed to do so. I’m looking forward to playing. I hope I can pass on my experience and help others. It’s simply this great desire to play, regardless of the league.
How have you perceived BVB women’s football so far?
Very professional. I’m someone who needs goals in life. I like the vision and the path that’s been shown to me, as well as the goals that BVB are pursuing. More than 3,000 spectators in the Regionalliga is also alot more than at many other Bundesliga matches. That’s confirmation for me that we’re on the right track – and simply very cool.
What are your strengths as a footballer?
My ball control and passing accuracy. I’m more of a technical player who is calm on the ball.
With your experience, what role would you like to play at BVB in the years to come?
Above all, I want to project calmness, lead by example, take responsibility, and contribute my experience in important matches. I want to help other players, but I can still learn a lot from them as well. I’m looking forward to that.
What are your personal goals and, of course, your goals together with BVB?
Personally, staying healthy is the most important thing, as is enjoying being able to play football. My goal with BVB is to eventually play in the first division.
