Germany win final warm-up match against USA with four BVB players involved

With BVB players Nico Schlotterbeck and Felix Nmecha once again in the starting line-up, the German national team secured a victory in their final warm-up match ahead of the FIFA World Cup. Germany defeated co-hosts the USA 2-1 (1-1). In the second half, the other Borussia players in the German squad, Waldemar Anton and Maximilian Beier, also picked up valuable minutes ahead of the tournament.

In front of a crowd of over 63,000 at Soldier Field in Chicago, Germany – with Schlotterbeck in central defence (playing the full 90 minutes) and Nmecha in defensive midfield (until the 80th minute) – took an early lead through a header from Kai Havertz in just the second minute. The USA equalised late in the first half (37).

In the second half, Leroy Sané (57) put the German side back in front, and shortly afterwards Waldemar Anton became the third Dortmund player to take to the pitch (62). He replaced captain Joshua Kimmich and took over his position on the right side of defence, playing solidly for the rest of the match. In a final phase marked by substitutions, Maximilian Beier also came on in the 80th minute – all four Borussia players in Nagelsmann’s squad thus got a chance to play in the dress rehearsal.

From Chicago, Germany will now travel on to Winston-Salem in the state of North Carolina, where they will be based during the World Cup. There is one week left for Nmecha, Schlotterbeck and co. to work on the final details before Germany face the underdogs from the Caribbean island of Curaçao in their World Cup opener in Houston (14 June, 19:00 CEST).

Another Borussia player, Gregor Kobel, completed his final World Cup warm-up on Saturday evening. Kobel’s Swiss side faced Australia but could only manage a 1-1 draw (1-0) in San Diego. Kobel had no chance of saving Australia’s equaliser. For Switzerland, the World Cup begins this coming Saturday against Qatar (13 June, 21:00 CEST).
