Preseason underway – BVB pros undergo performance diagnostics

It's back to work at the training ground in Dortmund-Brackel: Borussia Dortmund's first-team squad began their preparations for the 2024/25 season on Wednesday with performance diagnostics.

38 days before the cup match against Phönix Lübeck (17 August, 18:00 CEST), the new coaching team led by Nuri Sahin welcomed the first BVB squad members back to the training ground. However, the doctors and fitness coaches were in charge of the performance diagnostics. After the medical examination, the players went into the hall, where the tried-and-tested programme of strength, jumping and balance exercises as well as the lactate test on the treadmill awaited them.

Goalkeeper Alex Meyer and centre-back Niklas Süle were the first Borussia players to go through the various stations. Tom Rothe and Soumaila Coulibaly were also part of the group after returning from their loan spells. The international players, including new signing Waldemar Anton, are expected back in Dortmund at the end of July after their holidays.

The first group training session of the new season is scheduled for Thursday morning. The first preseason friendly will take place on Friday, when BVB face a selection of amateur footballers in the DEW Dream Match in Holzwickede (kick-off 18:00 CEST). Both the training session and the match will be broadcast live on BVB-TV.

Shortly afterwards, Can earned the chance to open the scoring as a result of some high pressing, which caused Freiburg to lose the ball in their half, but his shot from 17 metres was not accurate or powerful enough on 24 minutes. After exactly half an hour, the Black & Yellows were rewarded for their courageous performance: Couto struck a free kick from the right side into the box, Bensebaini chested the ball down and prodded it over the line to make it 1-0 in the 31st minute. After a risky pass from Kobel, the Englishman tried to put his body in the way 19 metres out in front of his own goal, but caught Treu, who was bursting forward at pace, and was given his marching orders by referee Zwayer for preventing a clear goalscoring opportunity. It was Bellingham\u2019s first foul in the game. Günter fired the resulting free kick just past the left-hand post.<\/p>\nBVB responded to going a man down by bringing on Pascal Groß for Fabio Silva, and had hardly any extended periods of possession thereafter. The match took place almost entirely in the Dortmund half. Kobel brilliantly tipped a follow-up shot from Treu around the post in the 69th minute, and also showed strong reactions to save Suzuki\u2019s shot, which had taken a wicked deflection off Bensebaini, in the 74th minute. But 60 seconds later, Freiburg were celebrating the equaliser Höler did well to get on the end of Günter\u2019s cross and finished brilliantly, finding the far post.
