U19s win big match against Düsseldorf 6-0
Fortuna had recently caused something of a surprise with a 1-0 win in their match against FC Schalke. But the hosts, who were still undefeated heading into Sunday, were defeated by the league leaders in the Paul Janes Stadium. BVB demonstrated their supremacy in the big game of the weekend and celebrated their seventh victory in the seventh preliminary round game of Group C of the new DFB junior league. At the same time, they extended their outstanding goal difference to +27.
Mike Tullberg was forced into fielding a team consisting exclusively of U18 and U17 outfield players, as William Rashidi missed out because of his injury suffered in Brugge, while Kjell Wätjen was called up to the first team, and Almugera Kabar and Cole Campbell were both away with the Under-23s. Yet the team got the job done confidently and ran riot over Fortuna in the first half.
When the half-time whistle rang out, goals by Noah-Gabriel Nikolaou (own goal, 25), Taycan Etcibasi (34), Diego Ngambia (36) and Luca Reggiani (44) had already put BVB 4-0 up. And they carried on where they left off in the second half, with Taycan Etcibasi scoring two minute after the break and Samuele Inacio scoring his first goal for Borussia in the 82nd minute against a Düsseldorf team down to ten men early after Fritz Menzel saw red in the 25th minute.
"The lads started impressively and completely controlled the game right up to the final whistle. All in all, they did very well," said Mike Tullberg, who was impressed by the convincing nature of his young team's victory. BVB looked confident from the outset and created chances almost every minute against Fortuna, who fielded six older players in their side.
Taycan Etcibasi was singled out for extra praise. He initially started as a number 8, before moving to centre-forward early on and looked powerful, causing trouble in the final third. The U18 international was rewarded with two goals. "I really have to highlight him, but the whole team were impressive and scored beautiful goals. We could even have won by much more," said a satisfied Mike Tullberg in summary.
On Friday, the U19s will play their first match in the second half of the preliminary round at RW Essen (kick-off: 18:30 CEST), followed by the second UEFA Youth League match against Glasgow Celtic on Tuesday, 1 October (16:00 CEST).
U19s: Lisewski – Mahjoubi (Reggiani, 34), Benkara (Blaszczyk, 73), Meiser, Feddersen (Cena, 51) – Etcibasi, Kaba (Degener, 46), Cherny (Fidjeu-Tazemeta, 46) – Diallo, Ngambia (4Niziolek, 46), Inacio
Najdi and Ogoke score in 2-0 victory for the U17s
Under-17 coach Karsten Gorges made just one change in Bremen compared to the side that started the spectacular 8-1 victory against SV Meppen, with former Werder man Jan-Mattis Wehrbein in between the sticks.
BVB started where they left off and linked up very well. Ahmad Najdi made it 1-0 to the Black & Yellows on 17 minutes, who also struck the woodwork and missed further chances. It ultimately took until the closing stages, at the end of time added on, before substitute Desmond Ogoke, who replaced Najdi, put the game beyond any doubt, bringing about the 2-0 final score.
BVB have now won their first three challenging away games in a row this season. On Sunday (29 September), they will take on league leaders Hannover 96, before facing third-placed Arminia Bielefeld on Wednesday (2 October, kick-off 18:00 CEST).
U17s: Wehrbein – König (Damberg, 77), Riedl, Perri (Driedger, 46), Ritter – Fahrenhorst – Zarqelain, Hoy, Branco (Tanyi, 85), Najdi (Ogoke, 85), Faust (Kolani, 77)
