"Everyone pulled their weight": U23 coach Zimmermann's positive assessment of training camp

Peace and quiet, a motivated squad, perfect training conditions: the Black & Yellow U23s returned to Dortmund on Thursday (9 January) following their eight-day training camp in Belek, Turkey. Coach Jan Zimmermann is pleased with what the team achieved while away, but stressed that his players will still have to put in some intense days of preparation before the second half of the 3. Liga season kicks off.

"The boys’ commitment was very good. Everyone really pulled their weight, worked with focus and got stuck in," said BVB coach Jan Zimmermann, who is also pleased that all of his players stayed injury-free. "That's the most important thing," said the 45-year-old. Although some players missed a few sessions due to a stomach bug, Zimmermann's overall assessment was positive: "I'm completely satisfied with how we made use of the week."

Zimmermann scheduled two training sessions per day in Turkey. The focus was primarily on defence, but "all areas" were addressed. In addition to the work on the training pitch, the team's programme included conditioning and analysis sessions as well as a friendly match (a 0-0 draw with Helmond Sport).

A total of 23 players, including five youth players and new signing Arne Wessels, travelled to Turkey. "The young players in particular were able to get a bit of a taste of the men's game this week and gain a lot from it," said a satisfied Zimmermann.

Despite the intense time away, the BVB coach emphasises that his team still has a lot of work to do. "The fact that we had so many players with us was an advantage," said the BVB coach. Nevertheless, several U23 players were absent so that they could train with the first team in Dortmund. "From a tactical point of view, it's only now that we can take an in-depth approach. We still need a few more sessions in order to improve our harmonisation and routines. It's important that we make the most of the coming week and prepare for the season opener in a focused and purposeful manner," said Zimmermann.

The U23s kick off their campaign on Saturday, 18 January, at bottom-of-the-table Unterhaching. Last year, BVB drew 0-0 in Freiburg in the first competitive match of the year. This was followed by three wins in a row. "As things stand, I wouldn't be happy with a draw in Unterhaching. However, if we win the next three games, then I would take a point," said the BVB coach.
