Lille or Aston Villa? Opponent to be drawn on Friday

Borussia Dortmund have reached the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League and will face either the seventh or eighth-placed team from the league phase. The draw will be held on Friday afternoon to determine whether BVB will be making the trip to France or England.

A lot has already been finalised early on in the new format in Europe's elite. Borussia Dortmund, tenth after the league phase, must now face the seventh or eighth team in the table after successfully making it through the play-off phase. The draw for the round of 16, quarter-finals (from this point on, purely to decide which team plays at home in the second leg) and semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 will be made this Friday (21 February) from 12:00 CET at the "House of European Football" in Nyon (Switzerland). The exact scheduling of the round of 16 matches will be announced on the same day. The first leg will take place in Dortmund.

In the round of 16 on 4/5 March, Black & Yellows will face either OSC Lille or Aston Villa at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. The second leg will take place a week later, on 11/12 March. Both potential BVB opponents recorded five wins, one draw and two defeats in the league phase.

Lille, currently fifth in French Ligue 1, won against Real and Atletico Madrid, among others, but lost at Sporting. Borussia Dortmund and OSC Lille have met once before in European competition. On their way to the UEFA Cup final in 2002, the Black & Yellows prevailed in the round of 16 thanks to the away goals rule. After a 1-1 draw in northern France, a 0-0 draw at Strobelallee was enough to progress.

Aston Villa, currently ninth in the Premier League, won against Bayern Munich (1-0) and in Leipzig (3-2), but lost away to FC Brugge. The only previous meeting was not so long ago: BVB beat the Birmingham club 2-0 in a friendly in August 2024. (br)
