Stadium bans, fines, and reporting to police - BVB takes action against cup throwers

Cup throwing is a recurring issue at Borussia Dortmund home games. This isn't just a matter of a trivial offence in a highly-charged stadium environment. Throwing cups endangers the safety of visitors to the stadium and can negatively affect their experience. During the home games that have taken place this season, BVB has so far identified 20 cup throwers who will face the consequences of their actions in the form of a stadium ban.

Many cup throwers underestimate the dangers that flying plastic cups pose to visitors and employees in the stadium. Among other things, cup throwing can result in people needing medical attention or hospitalisation. This season there have already been 26 people who have been injured as a result of cup throwing and have had to be treated by the German Red Cross.

If someone is caught throwing cups, they must leave the stadium immediately and can expect a nationwide stadium ban lasting up to 12 months. Other potential consequences include being reported to the police for causing bodily harm, being barred, and even under some circumstances the cancellation of the game. Perpetrators will also receive a minimum fine of €1,000.
