Wätjen and Kabar reach EURO semi-finals with Germany U19s
The young German won their last group match against Norway 2-1 with a last-minute goal from Cologne’s Said El Mala. The Scandinavians took the lead in the 72nd minute, but Leipzig’s Assa Ouedraogo, who had just come on as a substitute, equalised in the 85th minute with a fantastic goal to make it 1-1, and in injury time El Mala took advantage of a mistake by the Norwegian goalkeeper. Kjell Wätjen and Almugera Kabar were in the starting line-up, but both were substituted in the second half.
“We struggled for a long time, but we never gave up. The team came back strongly after falling behind – we’re very proud of that. In the end, we had the luck that we lacked in the 5-5 draw with England,” said Germany coach Hanno Balitsch.
As England lost 4-2 in their match against the Netherlands, who had already secured top spot in the group, Germany finished second with four points ahead of England and Norway. Spain dominated Group A with three wins and a goal difference of 9-1. Romania took second place. The European Championship hosts will contest the second semi-final against the Netherlands. (wiwi)
