Borussia Dortmund and Cerezo Osaka expand cooperation

After the BVB first team’s test match against Cerezo Osaka as part of the 2024 Asia Tour, the Borussia Dortmund women’s team and the Cerezo Osaka Ladies will also be working together more closely in future. The primary goal is to work together to create new prospects for both teams, and to increase the international appeal and value of women’s football.

The Cerezo Osaka Yanmar Ladies, founded in 2010 as an academy team, have been playing in the WE League - Japan’s top women’s league - since the 2023/24 season. As part of the envisaged partnership, BVB invited the players from Osaka to a summer training camp in Dortmund from 19-28 July, and arranged three test matches for the Cerezo Osaka Yanmar Ladies. After a win against Wacker Mecklenbeck (9-0) and a draw against Werder Bremen (1-1), the Japanese team played BVB to round off their visit and won 3-1. During their stay, they also visited the Footbonaut at the BVB training grounds and had a stadium tour of SIGNAl IDUNA PARK.

Future cooperation between the BVB women’s team and the Cerezo Osaka Yanmar Ladies will be founded on their shared philosophy of promoting and developing women’s football, emphasising the commitment of both teams to furthering the sport at the global level. An integral part of this will also be an exchange programme for coaches and players which aims to promote knowledge transfer and the development of both teams.

The relationship between Cerezo Osaka and Borussia Dortmund has a long history. As part of the Asia Tour in the summer of 2024, the BVB first team played a test match against the Cerezo Osaka men’s team, where they also met former Borussian Shinji Kagawa. Back in the day, the Japanese player moved from Osaka to the Ruhr to play for Borussia Dortmund from 2010-2012 and from 2014-2019. Kagawa is now back at his home club.
