Post-Match Report
BVB women finish seventh in the 2024 STEKA Cup
The Schleidweiler Sports Park in Zemmer was the venue for the 12th edition of the international women's football tournament. The field of participants, consisting of the second-tier clubs FSV Gütersloh, SC Sand and SG 99 Andernach, the Regionalliga clubs Bayer 04 Leverkusen, SC Fortuna Köln and FFC Wacker München as well as the U21 of the Belgian top club Standard Liège, promised an attractive sporting comparison. The matches were played in two groups, with each match lasting 30 minutes.
Borussia started in Group B and faced second-division club SC Sand in the first preliminary round match. The scoreboard showed a draw for a long time until the opponents from the Willstätt district of Sand scored shortly before the end after a long ball to make the final score 1-0 (25).
Borussia Dortmund against SC Fortuna Köln. This clash was the second match for coach Thomas Sulewski's team. Despite a good opening phase from the Black & Yellows, Cologne proved to be efficient and took the lead early on (5). After a set-piece situation, Fortuna added a free-kick to put BVB down by two goals. It stayed like that until the end, as the Black & Yellows fell to a 2-0 defeat.
In the final group match against SG 99 Andernach, the state league champions got off to a much better start. Consequently, BVB newcomer Sarah Giebels took a well-deserved lead when she was able to finish successfully after preparatory work by newcomer Nora Willeke (7). 20 seconds before the end, the team from the Palatinate scored a late equaliser to make it 1-1.
The Black & Yellows finished bottom of the group with one point and went into the match for seventh place. Against Standard Liège, Borussia knew how to impress: Coach Thomas Sulewski's team took the lead as early as the eighth minute. An attack down the right flank and Kimberly Becker's subsequent cross into the centre found Mandy Reinhardt, who converted to take the lead. Shortly before the end, Marah Tayeh scored the second goal after a pin ball, making the final score 2-0 and taking seventh place.
"With SC Sand, SC Fortuna Köln and SG 99 Andernach, we came up against higher-class opponents. These are clubs we'd like to play against to see where we're still lacking. We now know what we need to work on,’ said head coach Thomas Sulewski, summarising the day's tournament. ‘Thanks to the improved performance in the last two games, we can still go home with a good feeling,’" said Sulewski.
The next test match for the BVB women will take place on 4 August against 1. FC Magdeburg. Kick-off is at 17:30 CEST at the Wischlinger Weg Sportsplatz.
