Füllkrug and Can score – all Borussia players start the EUROs

A perfect start to the EURO: Germany impressively beat Scotland 5-1 (3-0) in their opening game in Group A on Friday evening. Borussia Dortmund forward Niclas Füllkrug (68) and BVB captain Emre Can (90+3) both scored after coming on as substitutes and added their names to the scoresheet for the European Championship. Gregor Kobel (Switzerland), Donyell Malen und Ian Maatsen (Netherlands) plus Salih Özcan (Türkiye) also tasted victory with their countries. Marcel Sabitzer and Austria succumbed to defeat to France.

The three Borussia players called up – Niclas Füllkrug, Nico Schlotterbeck and Emre Can – started out on the bench. Germany dominated the match and quickly settled into their attacking rhythm. The three goals before the break paved the way for national coach Julian Nagelsmann's team. By the time Scotland's Porteous was shown a red card in the 44th minute, there seemed to be no hopes of a comeback for the Tartan Army.

BVB striker Niclas Füllkrug entered the fray in place of goalscorer Kai Havertz in the second period (63). Only five minutes after coming off the bench, the substitute scored: Füllkrug hammered the ball into the top right corner at 110 km/h and increased the advantage to 4-0. After Scotland had managed to reduce the deficit via Rüdiger's own goal (87), substitute Can (80) re-established the four-goal cushion in the third minute of stoppage time and rounded off the scoring in the match. The assist came from Müller, who passed from a centre-left position in the box to late call-up Can, who in turn fired into the bottom corner from around 17 metres out. Nico Schlotterbeck remained an unused substitute and is still waiting to make his EURO debut.

Gregor Kobel and Switzerland claimed a commanding 3-1 opening win over Hungary on Saturday. The BVB keeper was on the bench for the entire match.

The Netherlands national team, featuring Donyell Malen and late call-up Ian Maatsen, were able to celebrate a narrow 2-1 victory over Poland in Group D on Sunday afternoon. Malen came on for Xavi Simons in the 62nd minute, while Maatsen did not get any playing time.

On Monday evening, Borussia player Marcel Sabitzer wore the captain's armband for the Austria national team against France. The midfielder played the full 90 minutes but could not prevent the 1-0 defeat through Maximilian Wöber's unfortunate own goal (38). It was Sabitzer's eighth match for his country at the European Championships, making the Borussia man Austria's record EURO appearance-maker.

On Tuesday evening, Salih Özcan and the Türkiye national team picked up their first victory. After 90 minutes against Georgia in Dortmund, the score stood at 3-1. The Borussia player came on in stoppage time.
