Malen misses out on EURO final with the Netherlands

BVB star Donyell Malen and his Netherlands team have missed out on a place in the final of the European Championship. A 2-1 loss to England in the semi-finals saw the attacker become the last Borussia player to be eliminated from the tournament.

In a home game at BVB Stadium Dortmund, as SIGNAL IDUNA PARK is known during the tournament, Malen was in the starting XI and played on the right wing. The Dutch got off to a perfect start when former Leipzig player Xavi Simons put them 1-0 ahead in the seventh minute. But just eleven minutes later, Harry Kane (Bayern Munich) equalised with a penalty. The English side, with former BVB star Jude Bellingham in midfield, then had the better chances to score.

After the break, Malen stayed in the dressing room and was replaced for the second half by Wout Weghorst, who has played for Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga. In the 79th minute, the English side were denied a goal for offside. Shortly before the final whistle, the Three Lions scored the winning goal through Ollie Watkins (90) and progressed to the final against Spain on Sunday.

There were eight Black & Yellow players at the start of the EURO, but Malen was the only one to reach the semi-finals. (cr)
