Patrick Drewes
Partrick Drewes has been at Borussia Dortmund since 2025. The experienced goalkeeper signed a deal that runs until 30 June 2027. “After learning of BVB’s interest and holding talks with the club’s officials, it was clear to me that I wanted to make the move to Dortmund. I want to contribute to the team’s success through my performances in training every day and I’m looking forward to being part of one of the biggest clubs in Europe.” Sporting director Sebastian Kehl welcomed the new signing: “Patrick has a lot of experience, is a good guy and knows the Ruhr area well. He will give his all for the team in his role and is eager to celebrate success with the lads.”
Patrick Drewes has moved around a lot in his career. Although his most recent move from Castroper Strasse in Bochum to Strobelallee in Dortmund (16 kilometres) is the second shortest distance between two German pro clubs (Nuremberg and Fürth are three kilometres closer), this was not always the case. In 2015, he moved from Wolfsburg to Wil in Switzerland, in 2016 from Wil to Münster, in 2017 from Münster to Würzburg...
But first things first. Patrick Drewes was born (on 4 February 1993) and grew up in Delmenhorst in the Oldenburg region, 15 kilometres west of Bremen. He was enrolled at the local sports club, TuS Heidkrug, when he was just two years old. At the age of 15, the goalkeeper moved to the youth academy of VfL Wolfsburg and remained with the club for a total of nine years. He played for the second team (Regionalliga), but was part of the extended professional squad and thus part of the team that won the DFB-Pokal against Borussia Dortmund in 2015. In his last two years at Wolfsburg, he played on loan for FC Wil in Switzerland (second tier) and Preussen Münster (third tier). Drewes joined VfL Bochum for the first time in 2019 via Wüzburger Kickers and played his part in helping the team win the Bundesliga 2 as back-up goalkeeper, making five appearances across the campaign. However, the following season he remained in the second tier after a move to SV Sandhausen, where he was the number one goalkeeper from 2021 to 2023. He also spent the following year as first-choice keeper at Karlsruher SC before returning to VfL Bochum in the summer of 2024, where he stood between the posts from the first to the 21st matchday of the 2024/25 Bundesliga season. He missed the Matchday 22 clash against BVB (a 2-0 win for Bochum) due to illness and then lost his place to Timo Horn. He saved 54% of the shots on his goal throughout the season.
