"Take this chance": Black & Yellows travel to Most full of confidence

Only one game stands between the BVB women's handball team and a place in the group stage of the EHF European League. But before then, the Black & Yellows still have a lot of work ahead of them. On Sunday evening (17:00 CET), BVB will be visiting Czech club Banik Most for the second leg of the third qualifying round. The first leg ended in a 36-32 win for BVB at home last Sunday, meaning that the Black & Yellows can afford to lose the second by three goals. But they don't want it to come down to that; the Bundesliga leaders have used the time in training to improve their transition defence. That could prove crucial.

“We're travelling to Most feeling confident. The first leg was decent from our side, but not perfect,” said head coach Henk Groener. Of course, he wants to learn from the first leg. It was noticeable that the Czechs relied on a 7-6 advantage almost the entire time. After initial difficulties, the BVB defence got better and better at dealing with it, but they still conceded 32 goals in the end. “That's definitely too many. We basically coped quite well with the one-on-one play, but our retreating was not as I would have liked,” said Groener.

For the second leg in Most on Sunday, Henk Groener expects the same tactics from the opponent, who have only lost one game in the Czech league and won 26-24 against Lazne Kynzvart three days after the qualifier in Dortmund. Groener expects Most to play in a similar vein to the first leg, “with a lot of energy, a lot of pace and with a constant 7-6 advantage”. Most's Portuguese coach Joao Alexandre Ferreira Florencio was very satisfied with the result of his tactical surprise in any case.

It is obvious that the second leg will not be a walk in the park, as Groener says. The four-goal lead is too small for that, and the physically strong Czech women would not be so easily shaken off. Whereby BVB not only has the advantage of a four-goal lead on its side, but also the fact that backcourt player Carmen Campos Costa could be back in the lineup. Her participation is not yet certain, but the BVB coach was reasonably confident that the Spanish player would be able to play in Most.

On Sunday, the team will have to defend the four-goal lead from the first leg to advance to the group stage starting in January. “We are going to Most as the Bundesliga leaders and as participants in the DHB Cup Final 4. I don't want to think about losing,” said department head Rupert Thiele, who is confident that the team will continue to compete on the European stage in January.

Andreas Kuno has very tangible reasons for this. “Only with games at the international level, such as the European League or better yet the Champions League, can you develop as a team. The example of HB Ludwigsburg shows this very clearly. We just have to take this chance,” explained Borussia's sporting director.
